SriLankan Airlines Can Generate $1 Billion in Revenue in Three Months, Says Former Chairman

COLOMBO – Upul Dharmadasa, the former Chairman of the Civil Aviation Authority, confidently claims that SriLankan Airlines has the potential to generate an impressive $1 billion in revenue within just three months. This ambitious target hinges on the implementation of effective leadership and strategic policies. Dharmadasa emphasizes that with the right aviation professionals and policy continuity, this goal is entirely achievable.

In a recent interview with Mirror Business, Dharmadasa outlined a detailed revival strategy aimed at rejuvenating the struggling national carrier. His vision includes recruiting skilled aviation professionals who have previously left the country, expanding international routes, and integrating digital innovations to enhance operational efficiency and revenue generation.

SriLankan Airlines Success Strategy

Dharmadasa’s plan centers on expanding routes and optimizing asset utilization to significantly benefit the airline. He specifically pointed out the substantial opportunity to serve the global Sri Lankan diaspora, particularly through underserved North American destinations.

  • Key Strategy Highlights:
    • Recruit skilled aviation professionals.
    • Expand international flight routes.
    • Utilize digital innovations for operational efficiency.

"We can easily operate flights to these destinations that cater to expats and potential tourists. If we establish the right connections and scheduling, this will create a strong revenue stream," Dharmadasa stated, highlighting the airline’s potential.

In addition, Dharmadasa suggested exploring flights to Caribbean countries where expatriate communities currently face limited and expensive air travel options. He proposed establishing a Miami (MIA) to Colombo (CMB) route to better serve both Caribbean expatriates and Sri Lankans in the United States.

Policy Reforms and Regulatory Concerns

To strengthen the airline’s position, Dharmadasa proposed significant policy reforms. He urged the Cabinet of Ministers to adopt a policy that mandates government officials, including diplomats, to prioritize SriLankan Airlines for official travel. This model mirrors the Fly America Act, which requires U.S. government-funded travelers to use American carriers when available.

Dharmadasa criticized previous decisions that granted fifth freedom rights to foreign airlines, especially those benefiting Middle Eastern carriers, which he claims have cost SriLankan Airlines approximately $500 million on the Colombo (CMB) to Male (MLE) route.

“Policy consistency is critical; frequent changes in regulations have hindered our ability to implement long-term strategies effectively,” he added.

Digital Transformation and Financial Management

A major aspect of Dharmadasa’s proposal is the transition to New Distribution Capability (NDC), a digital framework that allows airlines to sell tickets directly, bypassing third-party booking systems.

“If SriLankan Airlines had fully implemented NDC, we wouldn’t be paying millions in commissions to foreign ticketing platforms,” Dharmadasa noted. This modernization could considerably reduce costs and boost direct revenue.

Moreover, he identified inefficiencies in the airline’s credit card payment systems and advocated for a localized payment processing system to minimize currency exchange losses. He also expressed support for the new government’s efforts to absorb SriLankan Airlines’ legacy debt.

Background and Expertise

Upul Dharmadasa brings over 45 years of experience in aviation and hospitality, making him one of Sri Lanka’s most esteemed aviation professionals. He began his career at Air Ceylon (AE) as a cabin crew member in 1975 and has since established various travel and hospitality ventures in the United States while promoting Sri Lanka as a preferred tourist destination.
