Wizz Air Celebrates Milestone of 500 Million Passengers in 22 Years
Wizz Air has emerged as one of the most prominent airlines in Europe, boasting an impressive record of half a billion passengers flying with the low-cost carrier over the past 22 years.
On January 14, 2026, Wizz Air proudly announced that it had achieved the remarkable milestone of 500 million passengers since beginning operations in 2004, a feat accomplished “faster than any major European competitor.”
To commemorate this significant event, the airline hosted a celebration at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO), where CEO József Váradi unveiled details about the addition of a 16th aircraft to its fleet in the Italian capital.
The airline emphasized that this new record signifies that it has transported more individuals than the entire population of the European Union.
Wizz Air reported that it reached 100 million passengers in its first 11 years, managed to double that number in just four additional years, and expanded from 200 million to 300 million within a mere three years.
In a remarkable achievement, the airline added another 200 million passengers over the last three years, leading to the impressive total of 500 million in nearly 22 years since its establishment.
The company pointed out that a significant competitor took over three decades to arrive at the same passenger milestone.
“Reaching 500 million passengers is an extraordinary milestone that showcases our capacity to fundamentally transform travel experiences,” Váradi stated. “This accomplishment reflects 22 years of continuous growth and disciplined strategy, illustrating the trust that countless customers have placed in Wizz Air by choosing us time and again.”
In November 2025, Wizz Air celebrated the addition of its 250th aircraft, and it has since received two more, furthering its expansion plans.
“While many airlines launched in the early 2000s have ceased operations, Wizz Air has risen to be a leading low-cost carrier in Europe. This milestone strengthens our momentum as we work to continuously expand our network, enhance our operations, and redefine the future of air travel for our passengers worldwide,” Váradi added.
Wizz Air Launches Wizz Class
On January 13, 2026, Wizz Air officially unveiled Wizz Class after initially teasing the concept at the end of 2025.
Passengers opting for Wizz Class will enjoy front-row seating, with the middle seats left empty for added comfort during the flight.
This seating arrangement, including extra legroom in the first row, aims to provide travelers with more space to relax or work while in the air.
“Business travel is on the rise across our network, and we have listened to our passengers’ preferences. They desire more space and speed but do not want to incur the high costs associated with traditional business class. Wizz Class meets this demand—providing the room they need and the service they expect, all while maintaining our straightforward and convenient model,” explained Silvia Mosquera, Commercial Officer at Wizz Air.
Mosquera further emphasized, “We remain committed to being a single-class carrier while adhering to our efficiency objectives.”
