Discover Airlines Launches Ocean Blue Cabin Featuring Business Suites and Starlink Wi-Fi

Discover Airlines, a Lufthansa subsidiary, is set to embark on its most significant investment in five years, revamping its fleet of 16 Airbus A330-300 aircraft. This ambitious overhaul will feature completely redesigned cabins and is scheduled to begin in spring 2027.

The airline’s plans promise a “top-tier customer experience” across all travel classes. Passengers can expect amenities like Business Class suites with sliding doors and complimentary Starlink internet across the aircraft, enhancing in-flight connectivity.

The revamped aircraft will enter service in April 2027, with the entire fleet to be updated by mid-2028. Each A330 will accommodate 288 passengers—227 in Economy, 31 in Premium Economy, and 30 in Business Class—catering to both capacity and enhanced service offerings.

Operating as Lufthansa’s premium leisure airline in Germany, Discover Airlines flies from Frankfurt and Munich to various beach and resort destinations around the globe. Launched in 2021, the airline currently operates 30 aircraft with around 2,100 staff members. Interestingly, it began as an internal project called “Ocean,” and its call sign, Ocean (OCN), is still used in communications by air traffic controllers.

Design Philosophy: Ocean Blue

The new cabin design, dubbed Ocean Blue, is inspired by the colors of the ocean and the sense of exploration that travel embodies. This aesthetic flows throughout all travel classes with vibrant blue tones, streamlined lines, and thoughtfully chosen accents. The goal is to establish a sophisticated atmosphere reminiscent of a holiday vibe while reflecting the Lufthansa Group’s identity.

One of the standout features is the Human Centric Lighting, which employs varying color temperatures to support passengers’ biorhythms during long flights. The Ocean Blue branding acknowledges the airline’s roots in the initial “Ocean” project.

What Passengers Get in Each Class

Travelers in Economy Class will benefit from upgraded seating that offers enhanced legroom and better recline compared to the current configuration. Each seat includes a six-way adjustable headrest and more storage space, with optional extra legroom available for an additional fee.

Premium Economy passengers will enjoy notable enhancements as well. With an innovative hard-shell seat design, adjustments can be made without impacting those seated nearby. Additional features like privacy screens, integrated leg rests, and built-in reading lights make for a more comfortable experience on longer journeys.

For Business Class, the configuration of 1-2-1 ensures every passenger has direct aisle access. Many seats are arranged in pairs with adjustable dividers, providing flexibility for both solo travelers and couples. Each seat converts to a fully flat bed that is approximately two meters long, offering improved privacy, personal space, and storage compared to the existing configuration.

The highlight of Business Class is the Suite, featuring two seats with sliding doors that provide a more private experience. This area includes 32-inch monitors, ample legroom, and enhanced dining options, with dividers allowing shared space or individual separation.

Technology and Connectivity

All seats across each class will feature larger 4K touchscreens, equipped with Bluetooth connectivity for personal devices. Economy Class seats will also include USB-C ports, while Premium Economy and Business Class will be equipped with power outlets and wireless charging. For the first time, Premium Economy passengers will receive noise-canceling headphones.

With the upgrade to Starlink connectivity across the fleet, Discover Airlines aims to provide free internet access to all passengers, enhancing the overall travel experience.

“We are raising the bar for long-haul leisure flying,” says Ulrich Lindner, CEO of Discover Airlines. “This nine-figure investment underscores our commitment to improving comfort, quality, and the travel experience for our guests. We take pride in our achievements and eagerly anticipate welcoming passengers into the new Ocean Blue cabin.”

This considerable investment signifies the carrier’s belief that travelers are willing to invest in premium services, especially given the evolving landscape of travel. How do you feel about the future of air travel experiences like this?
