Lufthansa Rolls Out A380 Business Upgrades and Enhanced 747-8 Seating

Lufthansa has unveiled plans for a historic fleet renewal, announcing enhancements to the seating on its Airbus A380, A350-900, and Boeing 747-8 aircraft.

On January 30, 2026, Lufthansa shared images of the upcoming premium business class seats set to be retrofitted in all six Airbus A380 superjumbos.

The retrofitting will occur at Elbe Flugzeugwerke in Dresden, with the program kicking off in February 2026. The first aircraft to undergo these upgrades will be Lufthansa’s A380 nicknamed ‘Mike-Charly.’

Each updated A380 business seat will feature direct aisle access, a seat width of 58 cm, and a bed length of at least two meters. Additionally, there will be Bluetooth connectivity and flexible partitions. The new seating will be provided by Thompson, a company based in Northern Ireland.

Lufthansa’s Hub Manager at Munich, Heiko Reitz, stated, “Lufthansa operates the only strong A380 fleet in the EU, stationed at our 5-star airport. The retrofit underscores our commitment to providing a top flight experience on the long-haul aircraft that is very popular with our customers. The new premium seats offer enhanced privacy and significantly greater comfort.”

Reitz expressed eagerness to offer travelers this improved Business Class experience starting in April.

In addition to the new seating, each A380 will undergo routine maintenance at Elbe Flugzeugwerke, with the first aircraft expected to be completed by April 2026. By mid-2027, all eight A380s are projected to be fully retrofitted.

Following the enhancements, each A380 will include 68 new business class seats. Currently, Lufthansa’s A380s feature eight first class seats, 52 premium economy seats, and 371 standard economy seats.
