IATA Criticizes Europe’s SAF Strategy
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) announced that Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production is set to double to 2 million tonnes by 2025, meeting only 0.7% of global airline fuel demand. While this increase is promising, it will raise the global fuel bill by approximately $4.4 billion. Current SAF prices are high, especially in Europe, where upcoming regulations will require the purchase of one million tonnes, costing an estimated $2.9 billion. IATA’s Director General, Willie Walsh, warned that without careful regulation, inflated costs could hinder the aviation sector’s decarbonization efforts, urging a reevaluation of SAF mandates.
