Flydubai Introduces Direct Route from Vilnius to Dubai, Enhancing Baltic Connections
flydubai has announced the launch of its inaugural direct service connecting Vilnius, Lithuania, with Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE). This new route represents one of the longest nonstop flights available from Vilnius.
The first flight from Vilnius (VNO) to Dubai (DXB) is scheduled to take off on December 11, 2025. This service will operate three times per week throughout the year, utilizing Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, which will facilitate the flight’s six-hour duration. Following this, the same route will commence from Riga (RIX) on December 12, 2025.
To celebrate the launch, AeroTime attended a special event in Vilnius where executives from flydubai and representatives from Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) officially introduced this new flight service.
“Dubai will be our primary focus for this route, but we also aim to make Lithuania and the Baltics a more recognized destination. Unfortunately, this region hasn’t had much exposure due to limited flight operations,” stated Jeyhun Efendi, Divisional Senior Vice President of Commercial Operations at flydubai, during the event.
With its entry into the Lithuanian market, flydubai will be the first airline to offer a Business Class cabin featuring lie-flat seats, providing a premium travel option for local passengers.
“This is not just a new destination on our map; it’s an entirely new service that our customers have not experienced before,” said Simonas Bartkus, CEO of Lithuanian Airports.
What made the 2025 launch possible?
Initially set for late 2024, flydubai’s Vilnius route faced delays, with the first flight now slated for December 2025. Efendi noted that these delays were primarily due to “delivery setbacks from aircraft manufacturers.”
“Last year, there were significant delays in aircraft deliveries, which affected our operations negatively. It’s unfortunate to have to reschedule routes just before launch, but we had no choice,” he shared. “This year, however, the situation is looking much more promising.”
Several factors contributed to the successful launch planned for 2025. These include a rise in market demand, increased customer interest in direct flights from Vilnius to Dubai, and enhanced product offerings.
“We’ve undergone considerable changes in recent years,” Efendi remarked. “Our entire product has evolved, enabling us to provide better services for long-haul flights. The 737 MAX surpasses the earlier 737-800 models we used. The demand for flights to Dubai remains high worldwide.”
Riga as a backup amid Vilnius airspace disruptions
The launch is particularly timely, given the ongoing disruptions in Lithuanian airspace, including multiple closures at Vilnius Airport due to illegal contraband balloons from Belarus in recent months.
Despite these challenges, flydubai has expressed confidence in its capabilities to manage new route commitments, suggesting the use of nearby airports like Riga as a contingency plan.
“We originate from a region that frequently experiences volatility, so we are accustomed to managing crises like these,” Efendi stated. “Having an airport like Riga nearby allows us flexibility. Vilnius airport is not completely isolated from the surrounding Baltic region.”
Bartkus added that Vilnius Airport is continuously learning to adapt to these challenges.
“We collaborate daily with our operations team and the airlines’ operational teams to navigate potential disruptions,” Bartkus explained. “Even with the worst-case scenarios from the past two months, only about 5% of passengers were affected, meaning the vast majority—95%—are traveling without issues.”
