IndiGo Proudly Introduces Its Inaugural Airbus A321XLR Aircraft

IndiGo, India’s budget airline, proudly became the first operator of the Airbus A321XLR in the country on January 7, 2026, after taking delivery of its inaugural aircraft.

This delivery marks the beginning of a significant fleet expansion for IndiGo, with a total of 69 A321XLR aircraft ordered from Airbus. These planes are integral to the airline’s impressive multi-order strategy, which has brought its total order with the European manufacturer close to 1,000 aircraft.

IndiGo is placing its confidence in the A321XLR as a critical component of its strategic international growth. The versatility of this narrowbody aircraft opens up numerous markets across the Indian Ocean region, East and Central Asia, and Africa.

Additionally, the A321XLR is set to enhance connectivity between Europe and India. Its impressive range allows it to serve extensive parts of Europe directly from IndiGo’s hubs in Delhi and Mumbai.

The A321XLR will work in tandem with IndiGo’s upcoming A350-900 fleet, effectively allowing the airline to serve thinner long-haul routes and increase flight frequency to select international destinations.

Starting January 23, 2026, Athens (ATH) in Greece will be the inaugural international destination for IndiGo’s A321XLR. The airline will operate nonstop flights between the Greek capital and Delhi (DEL) as well as Mumbai (BOM), creating a direct connection between two of the world’s ancient civilizations, as noted by IndiGo’s CEO, Pieter Elbers.

The configuration of IndiGo’s A321XLR will feature 195 seats, including 12 in the “Stretch” class, which serves as the airline’s business class.
