Lufthansa Group Launches Starlink Connectivity Across Entire Fleet

Lufthansa Group is making headlines as the latest major airline to adopt SpaceX’s Starlink connectivity service. This new service will enhance in-flight internet options for travelers, marking a significant advancement for the airline industry.

Various airlines under Lufthansa, including Lufthansa itself, SWISS, Austrian, and Brussels Airlines, plan to introduce Starlink’s satellite-based internet connectivity by the latter half of 2026. The rollout will take a few years, aiming to have the entire fleet connected by 2029.

Current Inflight Internet Services

In the interim, Lufthansa Group will continue to provide its existing in-flight internet service, FlyNet. This service primarily relies on Viasat’s Ka-band technology and comes with a fee for Economy Class passengers, while some limited messaging options are available at no charge.

Notably, in January 2024, Lufthansa expanded its internet coverage to an additional 150 narrowbody aircraft. The airline has even supplemented Viasat’s service with ground-based internet access in specific areas of Europe, utilizing Deutsche Telekom’s 4G/LTE network.

Free Connectivity for Travelers

With the introduction of Starlink, high-speed in-flight internet will be accessible for free across all travel classes for status customers and Travel ID users. Travelers can easily register for a Lufthansa Travel ID during their flight, allowing them to utilize the service right away.

Lufthansa is now part of a growing network of European airlines embracing this technology. Competitors such as Air France-KLM and the International Airlines Group (IAG) are also opting for SpaceX’s low-Earth orbit satellite connectivity, which showcases the industry’s shift toward enhanced online services, even amidst the political conversations surrounding SpaceX and its founder, Elon Musk.
