Noida International Airport Set for Critical Trial Run Ahead of Commercial Launch
Noida International Airport (NIA), also referred to as Jewar Airport, is poised to conduct a crucial trial run for aircraft operations on December 9, 2024, at 11 AM. This significant milestone in the airport’s development marks a key step toward its anticipated commercial launch. The trial will involve an aircraft from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) executing a thorough landing procedure, providing essential data to ensure operational readiness.
Noida Airport Trial Landing: A Significant Step
During the trial, the aircraft will perform intricate aerial maneuvers around the airport, expected to last between 1.5 to 2 hours. The data collected during this period will be analyzed and submitted to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for a detailed review. Christoph Schnellmann, CEO of the airport, emphasized the importance of this landing trial in validating the airport’s operational capabilities. The test will assess the approach and departure procedures on the expansive 3.9 km runway, designated as 10-28.
Schnellmann noted that only one validation flight is scheduled. If successful, no further validation flights will be necessary, reflecting the meticulous planning and confidence in the airport’s preparedness.
Prior to this trial, significant groundwork was laid starting in October 2024, when the airport successfully completed a system calibration using a Beech King Air 360 ER aircraft. This calibration confirmed the operational status of crucial systems like the Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI).
The trial process will continue until December 15, after which NIAL will apply for an aerodrome license from the DGCA.
Complementing Delhi International Airport: Future Operations
Noida International Airport is set to commence commercial operations on April 17, 2025, representing a major advancement in India’s aviation infrastructure. The airport will initially connect 25 domestic routes, three international services, and two cargo flights, enhancing connectivity across 25 Indian cities.
The DGCA has already authorized domestic flight operations, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has approved the three international services. However, final clearance from the central government remains pending, adding a layer of complexity to the launch timeline.
Flight trials without passengers are scheduled between November 15 and December 15, using a public-private partnership model that highlights modern infrastructure development strategies. NIAL CEO Dr. Arunvir Singh confirmed the initial approval for 25 domestic flights, with plans to expand based on passenger demand.
YIAPL, a subsidiary of Zurich AG, has established crucial timelines for the airport’s clearances. The CEO emphasized the importance of meeting the April 17 deadline to avoid potential six-month delays in international approvals and IATA slot allocations.
IndiGo Airlines and Akasa Air will conduct comprehensive flight tests with full crews to verify runway functionality and ensure compliance with operational safety standards ahead of the airport’s official launch.
The Uttar Pradesh government has imposed a ₹21 crore fine on NIAL for the operational delay, moving the launch from the originally planned September 2024 to April 2025.
