Qanot Sharq Launches as Central Asia’s First Airbus A321XLR Operator
Qanot Sharq has made a significant mark by becoming the first operator of the Airbus A321XLR in Central Asia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This milestone was achieved after the airline received its brand-new aircraft.
On November 19, 2025, Airbus announced the delivery of the first of four A321XLRs. This acquisition is part of a long-term lease agreement with Air Lease Corporation (ALC).
### Aircraft Specifications
The A321XLR is equipped with CFM LEAP-1A engines and has been configured to accommodate 190 passengers in a two-class setup. This includes 16 full-flat seats in business class and 174 seats in economy class.
### Expansion Plans
Qanot Sharq plans to leverage its fleet of XLRs to broaden its international route network. The airline is aiming to connect with key destinations across Asia, including Sanya, Busan, and New York (with a stop in Budapest).
“I am thrilled to enhance our collaboration with Air Lease as we welcome our first A321XLR,” said Nosir Abdugafarov, owner of Qanot Sharq Airlines. “This aircraft’s remarkable range and efficiency will enable us to launch new nonstop routes from Uzbekistan and to expand our international network while providing our customers with unmatched comfort and convenience.”
### Future Deliveries
In February 2025, a significant agreement was reached between US-based Air Lease and Qanot Sharq for multiple new aircraft, with deliveries planned for 2026 and 2027.
The new A321XLR was notably seen departing the paint shop at the Airbus Finkenwerder facility near Hamburg, Germany, in October 2025.
### Statements from Air Lease
“Air Lease is proud to be the first lessor to introduce the A321XLR to Asia through our valued partner Qanot Sharq,” mentioned AJ Abedin, Senior Vice President of Marketing at Air Lease. “With its impressive operating performance and strategic position in Uzbekistan, I believe Qanot Sharq is well-placed to fully realize the potential of this groundbreaking aircraft.”
### Other A321XLR Developments
In related news, American Airlines completed its first flight with the Airbus A321XLR on December 18, 2025, marking it as the first US airline to operate the long-range aircraft.
The inaugural flight departed from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) at 11:00 ET, carrying over 150 passengers to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).
