NEW DELHI – Air India (AI) is actively pursuing the acquisition of approximately 10 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that were initially intended for Chinese airlines. This move comes as Chinese carriers are rejecting aircraft deliveries, largely due to escalating trade tensions between the United States and China.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg confirmed that Chinese customers are declining to accept deliveries because of recently imposed tariffs. "Due to the tariffs, many of our customers in China have indicated that they will not take delivery," Ortberg stated. Boeing is now looking to redirect these aircraft to other customers who have immediate fleet needs.

"Air India is very interested… if the deal goes through, the planes are expected to be added to the fleet by the end of the year," one source disclosed.

Air India Express has previously acquired “white tail” aircraft—planes manufactured for one customer but eventually delivered to another. This acquisition strategy often requires negotiating price adjustments to accommodate any configuration differences between the original specifications and the new operator’s needs.
