Icelandair Launches First Airbus A321LR Flights to Europe, US
Icelandair Set to Transform Fleet with Airbus A321LR Deliveries in 2024
Icelandair is poised for a significant transformation as it prepares for the delivery of its first Airbus A321LR in November 2024. This important addition to Icelandair’s fleet marks a pivotal shift for the airline, which has historically been a dedicated customer of Boeing aircraft. The introduction of the A321LR not only diversifies the fleet but also enhances the airline’s operational capabilities, allowing for increased efficiency on both short and long-haul routes.
Overview of the A321LR Deployment
The Reykjavik-based carrier has ordered four Airbus A321LR aircraft, which will gradually replace some of its Boeing 757-200 fleet. The transition process has already commenced, with the airline revealing the first images of its new aircraft in September 2024, showcasing a stylish magenta-tinted livery. Although the aircraft currently bears the Airbus test registration D-AZXZ, it will be registered in Iceland as TF-IAA upon delivery.
Initial Routes for the A321LR
Starting December 10, 2024, Icelandair will launch its inaugural A321LR flights from Iceland to Copenhagen (CPH) and Stockholm (ARN). The airline plans to expand its A321LR services to include flights to London-Heathrow (LHR) by December 23, 2024, and Oslo (OSL) by December 24, 2024. Further expansions are planned, with limited services to Manchester (MAN) in April 2025 and Glasgow (GLA) in May 2025. Additionally, Amsterdam (AMS) and Brussels (BRU) will also see A321LR operations.
Expanding Horizons with Longer Routes
Once the A321LRs are fully integrated into the fleet, Icelandair intends to utilize the aircraft’s extended range capabilities for longer destinations. Notably, service to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) in the U.S. is scheduled to begin on May 7, 2025. Flights to major European cities such as Rome (FCO), Berlin (BER), and Paris (CDG) are also set to commence in June 2025, following the completion of deliveries.
A321LR Fleet Configuration and Benefits
Icelandair’s A321LR aircraft will be configured with 22 lie-flat business class seats and 165 economy class seats. With a range of up to 4,000 nautical miles (7,400 km), the A321LR is well-suited to fit into Icelandair’s current route network while offering a slight increase in capacity compared to the Boeing 757-200 (187 vs. 183 seats).
According to ch-aviation, Icelandair’s existing fleet consists of 42 aircraft, including 17 Boeing 737 MAX 8, four Boeing 737 MAX 9, 11 Boeing 757-200s, and three Boeing 757-300s. This diverse fleet operates flights on 63 routes to 62 destinations across 21 countries, covering major cities in Europe, the U.S., and Canada.
Future Prospects for Icelandair
In addition to the four A321LRs, Icelandair has also placed an order for 13 Airbus A321XLRs, which are designed for even longer routes. These aircraft are expected to replace the remaining Boeing 757-200s and provide Icelandair with the opportunity to expand its long-haul offerings from Iceland.
