Air Canada Reduces US Routes, Adds A330 Service to Tampa
Air Canada Announces Major Route Adjustments for Summer 2025: Key Changes Revealed
MONTREAL – In an effort to optimize its operations, Air Canada (AC), the Canadian national carrier, is set to implement significant route cuts and capacity adjustments on its U.S. flight routes for the summer of 2025. This strategic decision comes as the airline aims to streamline its services and meet evolving passenger demand. Independent aviation analyst Ishrion Aviation reported these changes on its website and social media platforms.
Air Canada Cuts Some U.S. Routes
One of the most notable changes involves the cancellation of flights to three U.S. cities: Hartford, Connecticut (BDL), Kansas City, Missouri (MCI), and Baltimore, Maryland (BWI) from its Toronto (YYZ) hub. Initially scheduled to resume service in summer 2025, these routes will now be on hold for at least another year. Furthermore, Air Canada will not be reinstating its Toronto to Portland (PDX) route, which has been suspended.
In addition to these route eliminations, Air Canada is also reducing flight frequencies on several other U.S. routes, although specific details regarding these reductions have yet to be disclosed.
Capacity Increase on Select Routes
Despite the route cuts, Air Canada is strategically increasing capacity on select routes by introducing mainline aircraft and enhancing flight frequencies. For instance, the Toronto-to-Chicago (ORD) route will see its daily flights increase from four to six. Starting May 1, flights from Toronto to Philadelphia (PHL), Raleigh/Durham (RDU), and St. Louis (STL) will operate daily using the Airbus A220-300, marking an upgrade to mainline service. Additionally, Charlotte (CLT) will also receive daily mainline service with the Airbus A220-300 beginning June 1.
A330 Service to Tampa, Florida
Another exciting update is that Air Canada will upgrade its Toronto-Tampa route with Airbus A330-300 service starting February 1, 2025. The airline plans to operate two daily widebody flights instead of the previously scheduled four daily narrowbody frequencies. This enhancement aims to consolidate passenger demand, utilizing the A330-300’s increased capacity. The widebody service is expected to continue through February 28, 2024.
As Air Canada prepares for the peak of summer 2025, the airline will offer approximately 160,000 weekly seats to the U.S., solidifying its position as the largest carrier in the Transborder market. Passengers can look forward to over 200 daily flights to more than 45 destinations.
