Air France-KLM Group and Saudia Sign Major MoU to Enhance Cooperation

In a significant move to boost aviation ties, the Air France-KLM Group and Saudia, the national airline of Saudi Arabia, have officially signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU). This agreement, signed on November 3, 2024, during the Saudi-French Investment Forum in Riyadh, focuses on enhancing passenger transport and aircraft maintenance services between the two airlines. The collaboration aims to provide travelers with more options and improve overall customer experience.

Strengthening Airline Partnerships

The newly established MoU between Air France-KLM and Saudia emphasizes the importance of collaboration within the SkyTeam alliance. Key highlights of the agreement include:

• Expanded Codeshare and Interline Agreements: The airlines plan to deepen their existing agreements, allowing passengers greater connectivity between their hubs and beyond.
• Operational Optimization: Efforts will be made to enhance operations and improve the customer journey, including co-locating terminals at major airports.
• Maintenance Collaboration: Air France Industries-KLM Engineering and Maintenance (AFIKLM E&M) will handle a minimum of 50% of maintenance work on Saudia’s GE90 engines, utilized in Boeing 777 aircraft. This includes localizing the assembly and disassembly processes.

Future Initiatives in MRO Capabilities

Saudia is also considering AFIKLM E&M for future Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) sourcing processes. Together with Saudia Technic, they will explore establishing a joint venture for GEnx engines, which are used in Boeing 787 aircraft. These initiatives are in line with Saudia’s commitment to developing local talent and enhancing its MRO capabilities.

"The commencement of direct flights will enhance connectivity and enable the two-way flow of thousands more tourists between our two great countries," noted Majid Khan, CEO of the Saudi Air Connectivity Program.
