IndiGo Introduces New Flights to Penang and Kuala Lumpur
IndiGo Airlines Launches Non-Stop Flights from Chennai to Penang, Malaysia
BENGALURU – IndiGo Airlines (6E), India’s largest airline by both passengers carried and fleet size, has officially launched non-stop flights connecting Chennai (MAA) to Penang (PEN) in Malaysia, effective December 21, 2024. This new route marks an exciting development for both business and leisure travelers, enhancing connectivity between India and Malaysia.
Direct Flights to Penang from Chennai
Starting today, IndiGo will operate daily flights from Chennai to Penang. This new service not only expands IndiGo’s international offerings but also establishes Penang as its third destination in Malaysia, joining Kuala Lumpur (KUL) and Langkawi (LGK). With the introduction of this route, IndiGo now serves a total of 37 international destinations, showcasing its rapid growth in the aviation sector.
The flight, designated as 6E1045, will depart Chennai every morning at 2:15 AM IST, arriving in Penang at 8:30 AM local time. The return journey will leave Penang at 9:30 AM local time, landing back in Chennai at 10:35 AM IST. The total flying time is approximately 3 hours and 45 minutes for outbound flights and 3 hours and 35 minutes for returns.
Cultural and Economic Significance of the Chennai-Penang Route
This new Chennai-Penang route is more than just a flight connection; it is a bridge strengthening the cultural and historical ties between Tamil Nadu and Malaysia. The Indian community in Penang is significant, with Tamilians comprising about 11% of the population. This flight will facilitate familial connections, cultural exchanges, and potential business investments, further enhancing the relationship between the two regions.
A Historical Perspective: Chennai’s Connection to Penang
While this may seem like a new service, it’s worth noting that Chennai previously had direct flights to Penang in the 2010s. This route is not a brand new introduction but rather a revival of non-stop flights that existed until 2012. Past attempts by airlines to re-establish connections have been met with challenges, primarily due to low demand. However, with IndiGo’s competitive pricing and extensive domestic network, there is optimism that this route will thrive.
IndiGo Expands Operations to Kuala Lumpur from Bengaluru
In addition to the new Chennai-Penang route, IndiGo has also announced daily non-stop flights between Bengaluru (BLR) and Kuala Lumpur (KUL). This launch follows closely behind the introduction of flights to Langkawi from Bengaluru, which commenced on December 16, 2024. The new Bengaluru-Kuala Lumpur flight is part of IndiGo’s strategy to bolster its international presence and cater to the growing travel demand.
The flight from Bengaluru will take off at 7:05 PM IST and is expected to arrive in Kuala Lumpur at 2:00 AM local time, with a return flight departing Kuala Lumpur at 3:00 AM local time and reaching Bengaluru at 5:00 AM IST. After a hiatus since March 2020 due to the pandemic, this marks the resumption of this vital route.
Bengaluru: A Growing Hub for International Travel
Bengaluru has emerged as a key hub for IndiGo’s international operations, with the number of daily international departures increasing from just six in January 2024 to fifteen by December 2024. With 13 international destinations now served from Bengaluru, IndiGo aims to expand further, reaching a total of 80 destinations soon.
