Lufthansa Orders 5 More A350-1000s, Totaling 15
Lufthansa Group Expands Fleet with Additional A350-1000 Orders
The Lufthansa Group has recently announced a significant expansion of its fleet by ordering five additional A350-1000 aircraft, bringing the total firm order for this next-generation long-haul aircraft to fifteen. This strategic move reflects the airline’s commitment to modernizing its fleet and enhancing passenger experience while prioritizing sustainability.
The new A350-1000 aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2028 and 2030, with the total order valued at approximately $2 billion at list price. This latest acquisition adds to the Lufthansa Group’s extensive order history, which now totals 75 A350-900s and A350-1000s. Currently, 28 of these aircraft are already in scheduled service, with an additional 47 set to be delivered by 2031.
Strengthening Partnerships with Airbus
In a statement, Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, emphasized the group’s strong partnership with Airbus. He noted, “Today’s order underscores our great confidence in our long-standing, close and successful partnership with Airbus. With the state-of-the-art A350 long-haul jets, we are accelerating the largest fleet modernization in our history.”
Spohr further highlighted the group’s dedication to sustainability, stating, “We are investing more than ever before in our history to make air transport more sustainable, to achieve our CO₂ reduction targets and at the same time offer our customers the highest level of comfort with a first-class travel experience.”
Historic Investment in Aircraft
The Lufthansa Group has a long-standing relationship with Airbus, having ordered a total of 770 aircraft throughout its history, making it Airbus’ largest customer worldwide. Spohr also mentioned the upcoming integration of ITA Airways, which will add another 100 short- and long-haul aircraft to the Lufthansa Group Airlines’ fleet.
Transitioning to Modern Aircraft
The twin-engine A350-1000 jets are designed to replace older four-engine aircraft models, including the Boeing 747-400, Airbus A340-600, and Airbus A340-300. This transition not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with the airline’s sustainability goals.
