HOBART – Singapore Airlines (SQ) is actively considering the launch of non-stop flights to Tasmania, a potential game-changer for travel between Singapore and the picturesque Australian island state. This initiative, if realized, promises to enhance connectivity and simplify travel for Singaporean tourists eager to explore Tasmania’s unique attractions.
In a recent interview with Pulse Tasmania, Tasmanian Premier Jeremy Rockliff revealed ongoing negotiations with both Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific (CX) to establish direct international flights to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. This development highlights the increasing interest in connecting Singapore and Tasmania more efficiently.
Cathay Pacific & Singapore Airlines: A Strategic Partnership
Premier Rockliff underscored the strategic significance of collaborating with leading airlines like Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific. He expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of direct flights, which would eliminate the current travel complexities faced by Singaporean travelers. At present, visitors must navigate a series of domestic flights or ferry connections from Melbourne to reach Hobart.
The introduction of a direct route could significantly streamline travel, potentially leading to a surge in tourism and economic exchanges between Singapore and Tasmania.
Infrastructure Upgrades: Paving the Way for Direct Flights
A vital component of this initiative is the AUD 130 million (S$113 million) upgrade of Hobart Airport’s runway, set to be completed by mid-2025. This upgrade will accommodate long-haul wide-body aircraft, such as Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 models, thus opening the door to non-stop flights between Singapore and Tasmania.
Travel industry experts are optimistic about the potential impact of this route. Alicia Seah from 3Playtopia noted that many Singaporean travelers have already explored major Australian cities like Perth, Sydney, and Melbourne. Tasmania offers a fresh alternative, with its stunning landscapes, unique wildlife, and premium golf courses appealing to those seeking a different Australian experience.
Addressing Challenges: The Road Ahead for Non-Stop Flights
While the proposed route holds promise, independent aviation analyst Brendan Sobie highlighted significant challenges. He pointed out that while Tasmania is an attractive destination, its small, highly seasonal market complicates sustainable airline operations. Sobie suggested that low-cost carriers, such as Scoot, might be better suited for this route compared to Singapore Airlines.
To ensure economic viability, the potential service would likely require extensive promotional support and strategic incentives.
Changi Airport Group has expressed its commitment to expanding connectivity, emphasizing the importance of new destination services. With 4.7 million passengers traveling between Singapore and Australia in the first nine months of 2024, Australia remains a key market for Changi Airport.
