Air India Expands US Network: New Destinations and Increased Flights

GURUGRAM – Tata Group-owned Air India is set to enhance its presence in the United States by introducing new destinations and increasing flight frequencies as it integrates additional widebody aircraft into its fleet. This strategic move aims to strengthen Air India’s competitive edge among global carriers and cater to the growing demand for travel between India and North America.

As of December 2024, Air India is the only full-service Indian carrier serving five major US cities: Chicago O’Hare (ORD), Newark (EWR), New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), and Washington Dulles (IAD). With plans for expansion, travelers can expect exciting new routes in the near future.

Air India New US Destinations: What to Expect

Air India is likely to launch new routes connecting Delhi to several key US cities, including:

  • Dallas Fort Worth (DFW)
  • Boston Logan (BOS)
  • Los Angeles (LAX)

These new destinations will be served from Air India’s hub at Delhi International Airport (DEL).

Los Angeles (LAX)

Air India may soon initiate flights to Los Angeles, utilizing Airbus A350s and Boeing 777s. The distance from Los Angeles to Delhi is approximately 8,013 miles (12,895 kilometers). Historical data shows a strong market demand for this route, with over 300,000 passengers traveling between the two cities in 2017, according to IATA data.

Former Air India Chairman Ashwani Lohani previously indicated plans to connect Los Angeles and either Houston or Dallas during a launch event for a new flight. Although this route never materialized, Tata Group’s leadership is committed to revitalizing Air India and making it a formidable competitor against airlines like Emirates and Singapore Airlines.

Seattle-Tacoma (SEA)

The Seattle to Delhi route spans around 7,061 miles or 11,363 kilometers, typically requiring over 14 hours of travel. Current data indicates an average of 510 daily passengers traveling between these two cities. While American Airlines once considered a Seattle-Bangalore service, Air India is now evaluating the viability of this route.

Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and Houston (IAH)

Both Dallas and Houston are on Air India’s radar, especially given the substantial market demand. DFW Airport reports around 800 daily passengers traveling between Dallas and India. The distance from Delhi to Dallas is approximately 8,186 miles (13,174 kilometers), while Houston is slightly farther at 8,373 miles (13,475 kilometers).

Given that there is a strong Telugu-speaking population in the Dallas area, Air India is exploring the potential for flights between Dallas and Hyderabad (HYD), although operational challenges remain. The growing Asian Indian community in Texas further supports the demand for these routes.

Boston Logan (BOS)

Boston’s air travel market to India exceeded 185,000 passengers in 2019, indicating significant demand. Air India can efficiently serve this route with slightly smaller widebody aircraft, such as the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner. The distance from Boston to Delhi is about 7,146 miles (11,500 kilometers).

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) and Philadelphia (PHL)

Air India is also considering flights to Atlanta, the world’s busiest international airport, where the Indian Consulate has actively lobbied for direct service. The distance between Delhi and Atlanta is approximately 7,985 miles (12,850 kilometers). Philadelphia emerged as a potential route after American Airlines initially considered it in 2019.
