Asia Pacific Airlines Experience Significant Growth in November 2024

In November 2024, Asia Pacific airlines reported remarkable growth in international air passenger and cargo markets, driven by strong consumer and business demand. According to the latest figures from the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), the region’s airlines collectively served 31 million international passengers, marking a 19.8% increase compared to November 2023. This surge highlights the continued recovery and resilience of the aviation sector in the Asia Pacific region.

Increase in Passenger Traffic and Load Factor

The statistics reveal that the average international passenger load factor rose by 2.7 percentage points to reach 82.0% for the month, supported by a substantial 17.6% increase in available seat capacity. This growth is indicative of a robust rebound in travel demand, as both leisure and business travelers return to the skies.

Boom in Air Cargo Demand

In addition to passenger growth, the air cargo segment also saw a significant uptick. International air cargo demand, measured in freight tonne kilometers (FTK), increased by 10.5% year-on-year. This growth has been fueled by sustained e-commerce demand and the front-loading of export orders in anticipation of potential US tariff hikes. The cargo sector’s capacity also grew by 10.0%, resulting in a slight increase in the average international freight load factor to 62.3%.

Expert Insights on Market Trends

AAPA Director General Subhas Menon commented on these positive results, stating, “Asia Pacific airlines have led growth in international travel markets this year, benefiting from strong demand for both business and leisure travel. Demand has now fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels.” Over the first eleven months of 2024, the region’s airlines recorded a staggering 31% increase in the number of international passengers, totaling 334 million.

Menon also pointed out that the air cargo market experienced healthy growth in November, driven by increased demand leading into the year-end holiday season. The sector recorded a 14% year-on-year increase for the first eleven months of the year, attributed to persistent operational challenges in maritime shipping and the anticipated US tariff hikes.

Future Outlook for Asia Pacific Airlines

Looking ahead, Menon expressed optimism about the prospects for both passenger and cargo markets in 2024, stating, “Based on current trends, the year is anticipated to conclude on a positive note.” However, he also acknowledged the potential challenges posed by global economic uncertainty and supply chain disruptions. Despite these hurdles, Asia Pacific airlines remain strategically positioned to navigate these challenges while upholding the highest safety and service standards.
