IndiGo Airlines Expands Fleet with Wet-Leased Airbus A320s from Freebird Airlines

In a significant move to address fleet challenges, IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest low-cost carrier (LCC), has announced the wet lease of four Airbus A320 aircraft from Turkish airline Freebird Airlines. This strategic decision comes amid operational hurdles faced by IndiGo, including engine issues and supply chain constraints affecting its Airbus fleet.

Details of this leasing arrangement were first highlighted by aviation expert Tanka Rohidas and shared by Indian Aviation Guy on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter).

IndiGo Wet Leases A320 Aircraft

IndiGo, based in Gurugram, is currently navigating a complex situation with its fleet. The airline has been increasingly resorting to wet leasing, which involves leasing aircraft along with crew and maintenance services, to mitigate disruptions caused by grounded Airbus planes. The newly leased A320s from Freebird Airlines are set to enhance IndiGo’s operational capacity.

Freebird Airlines, established in Turkey and Malta, operates a diverse fleet of 14 aircraft and serves over 100 destinations, primarily focusing on scheduled and charter flights to popular European holiday spots. Its main hub is located at Antalya Airport.

Aircraft Details and Specifications

The four Airbus A320s leased from Freebird Airlines include:

  • FH901: 13.8 years old (TC-FBV)
  • FH903: 16.8 years old (TC-FHF)
  • FH915: 15.8 years old (TC-FHC)
  • FH917: 11.1 years old (TC-FHP)

All these aircraft are powered by CFM 56-5A engines known for their reliability and low maintenance requirements. Notably, nearly 60% of A318/A319/A320/A321 aircraft worldwide utilize these engine variants. After safely landing at Delhi International Airport (DEL), the planes will undergo inspections by IndiGo’s maintenance department before being deployed on designated routes.

The specific routes for these aircraft have yet to be disclosed, but updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Wet-Leasing: A Growing Trend for IndiGo

IndiGo’s wet leasing strategy is not limited to Freebird Airlines. The carrier has previously leased aircraft from several operators, including SmartLynx Airlines, Qatar Airways, and Turkish Airlines. Currently, over 20 A320ceo aircraft, along with 10 Boeing 737 MAX 8s, are part of IndiGo’s leased fleet.

This strategy allows IndiGo to efficiently manage its operations, deploying A320ceo aircraft primarily on domestic routes while utilizing the 737 MAX for international flights, particularly between Doha and India. The airline’s two Boeing 777s are exclusively assigned to routes between Delhi and Istanbul, as well as Mumbai and Istanbul.

As of now, IndiGo boasts a fleet of 434 aircraft, but 87 are currently inactive due to various maintenance issues and parts unavailability.
