Vietjet Welcomes Its First Boeing 737-8, Expanding Beyond Airbus Fleet
Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet has welcomed its inaugural Boeing 737-8 aircraft, part of a significant order that includes 200 Boeing jets valued at $32 billion. This marks a noteworthy addition to the airline’s fleet, as it is the first Boeing aircraft to join its previously all-Airbus collection.
The handover ceremony occurred at Boeing’s Seattle facility, with the presence of Vietnam’s President Luong Cuong, several senior officials from both nations, and key business partners. This event was officially announced by the airline on September 21, 2025.
A Historic Partnership
Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, Chairwoman of Vietjet, expressed her feelings during the event, stating, “The first Boeing aircraft received under this historic order is the result of nearly a decade of partnership between Boeing and Vietjet. It marks the start of hundreds more deliveries in the years ahead.”
This delivery also coincides with the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the United States.
Symbol of Cooperation
Vietjet noted that this delivery serves as a “powerful symbol” of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The relationship aims to enhance trade, investment, and job creation within the U.S.
The airline also highlighted this milestone as significant in strengthening the bond between Vietjet and Boeing.
Opening New Avenues
Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, expressed excitement as well. She remarked, “We are honored to join Vietjet in celebrating the airline’s first Boeing airplane. The 737-8 will support the airline’s network growth, opening new routes to serve Southeast Asia and reinforcing the strength of one of the region’s most dynamic new-generation airlines.”
Supply Chain Delays
The news regarding this initial delivery first surfaced through Reuters on September 16, 2025. However, the completion faced a nine-year delay due to a global grounding of Boeing 737 aircraft following two tragic incidents in 2018 and 2019.
Adaptive Strategies
In February 2019, Vietjet made a strategic shift in its fleet, moving away from an all-Airbus focus and opting for more Boeing orders.
The airline is optimistic that this new aircraft, along with future deliveries, will be effectively utilized on high-demand regional routes.
