Indian Government Launches Expanded UDAN Scheme to Boost Regional Air Connectivity
NEW DELHI – The Indian government is set to implement a modified version of the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik) scheme, aimed at significantly enhancing regional air connectivity across the nation. This ambitious initiative will connect an additional 120 destinations over the next decade, catering to approximately four crore passengers and making air travel more accessible to all.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman during the presentation of the Union Budget for 2025-26. The revised UDAN scheme is designed to improve accessibility to remote regions, particularly in hilly and northeastern areas, ensuring that air travel is not limited to major cities.

According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, the UDAN scheme has significantly bolstered domestic air travel, contributing to India’s status as the fastest-growing aviation market globally. In response to this growth, Indian airlines have made substantial aircraft orders, exceeding 1,700 planes, to expand their networks and accommodate increasing passenger volumes.
Investment in Aviation Infrastructure
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and private developers are executing a capital expenditure plan of over Rs 91,000 crore between FY20 and FY25, with approximately 91% of this investment already utilized as of November 2024. This funding is crucial for airport expansion, technological advancements, and improved passenger facilities.
