COLOMBO—SriLankan Airlines is setting its sights on an ambitious goal, aiming to expand its fleet to 50 aircraft within the next five years. During the launch of the Sri Lanka Conference Ambassador Programme in Colombo, CEO Richard Nuttall revealed the airline’s plans to double its operational capacity within five years. “Our goal is to enhance our fleet and service offerings significantly,” Nuttall stated in an interview with Mirror Business. The airline aims to increase its operational capacity by 25-30% before the close of 2025, starting with the acquisition of three wide-bodied aircraft through wet lease agreements.
This expansion comes in light of a new government policy under the recently elected NPP administration, which has shifted away from privatizing the struggling national carrier. Instead, officials have implemented a comprehensive five-year corporate revival strategy, underscoring their confidence in SriLankan Airlines’ potential for recovery and growth.

Despite the optimistic expansion plans, SriLankan Airlines has encountered significant financial hurdles. In the first quarter of 2024/2025, the airline reported a revenue decline of 12.7% year-over-year, totaling Rs. 63.8 billion. Profit before tax fell dramatically from Rs. 8 billion in the previous year to just Rs. 0.6 billion, while net losses surged to Rs. 12.9 billion compared to a profit of Rs. 25.8 billion in the same quarter last year.
To sustain operations amid these challenges, the Treasury continues to provide crucial financial support through equity injections and loan guarantees. This assistance is vital for ensuring the continuity of services despite the airline’s financial difficulties.
Positive Signs for Future Growth
On a brighter note, recent trends in tourism suggest a potential recovery for SriLankan Airlines. The airline played a pivotal role in air travel during December 2023, serving as the primary carrier for seven out of the ten largest source markets. During a panel discussion, CEO Richard Nuttall emphasized the importance of adapting to route-specific demands through strategic capacity increases and service upgrades.
Nuttall also pointed out that Sri Lanka has historically struggled with consistent tourism initiatives, highlighting the necessity for sustained governance in future tourism development programs.
