India Extends IndiGo’s Partnership with Turkish Airlines for Six Months

The Indian government has granted low-cost airline IndiGo a six-month extension on its aircraft leasing agreement with Turkish Airlines, now valid until February 28, 2026.

In May 2025, commercial relations between IndiGo and Turkish Airlines came under scrutiny as India engaged in a brief military conflict with Pakistan. During this period, the Indian government chose to review all contracts with Turkish companies in sectors deemed sensitive to national security, including aviation.

The Turkish government’s support for Pakistan prompted these reviews, impacting various businesses, such as Çelebi Aviation Holding, which has operations at several Indian airports. Despite the ongoing uncertainties, the Indian government’s recent decision allows IndiGo to maintain operations on a critical international route while exploring alternative options should further restrictions be enforced.

During the 81st Annual General Meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in Delhi, IndiGo’s CEO Pieter Elbers discussed the airline’s initial three-month reprieve regarding the Turkish business ban, expressing optimism about finding a long-term solution.

IndiGo has recently placed orders for Airbus A350 widebody and A321XLR long-range narrow-body aircraft to expand its long-haul capabilities. Meanwhile, they are eager to penetrate the European market, and they found a valuable ally in Turkish Airlines. This partnership facilitates the gradual entry into Europe through the damp lease of two Boeing 777 aircraft and code-sharing agreements linking India and Istanbul (IST) to various European destinations.

How do you think this extension will impact IndiGo’s future operations and expansion plans?
