Australian airline Qantas has made an exciting announcement that promises to enhance regional air travel: the introduction of larger QantasLink Q400 turboprop aircraft on all routes departing from Adelaide (ADL). This strategic move marks the return of the 74-seat Q400 aircraft to Adelaide after a decade and expands its service to new destinations, including Mount Gambier and Whyalla.
Rachel Yangoyan, CEO of QantasLink, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, “This is the first time the 74-seat Q400 aircraft will be back to Adelaide in 10 years.” The upgrade is part of Qantas’ broader initiative to improve connectivity within regional Australia, supported by the acquisition of 14 additional Q400s for its fleet.

The deployment of Q400 aircraft will enhance travel options to several key regional locations:
- Port Lincoln
- Whyalla
- Mount Gambier
- Kangaroo Island
With this transition, Qantas will maintain three Q400s based in South Australia, significantly improving regional connectivity and supporting the tourism sector. South Australian Tourism Minister Zoe Bettison noted, “The introduction of faster and larger aircraft on our regional routes will not only improve travel times but also increase capacity, making it easier for visitors to explore our regions.”
Transitioning to Modern Aircraft
Currently, Qantas operates over 50 return flights per week between Adelaide and various regional cities using smaller Q300 aircraft, which only accommodate 50 passengers. As part of its modernization efforts, Qantas is gradually retiring these older planes, ensuring that travelers benefit from enhanced comfort and capacity.
Enhanced In-Flight Experience
In addition to the introduction of larger aircraft, Qantas is also revamping its in-flight service. Beginning in mid-March 2025, passengers can look forward to a selection of eight new regional wines available on all QantasLink turboprop flights. Six of these wines will be sourced from renowned South Australian wineries, including Stonehaven, Pioneer Road, and Angove.
