Virgin Atlantic and WestJet Enhance Codeshare for Better Travel
Virgin Atlantic and WestJet Expand Codeshare Agreement to Enhance Travel Between Canada and the UK
Virgin Atlantic and WestJet are set to enhance their codeshare agreement, significantly improving travel options between Canada and the UK. This expansion aims to strengthen business, leisure, and family connections, allowing travelers to easily connect to India and other destinations via London. With this strategic move, both airlines are positioning themselves to compete more effectively in the UK-to-Canada market.
Launch of New Toronto Route in March 2025
In March 2025, Virgin Atlantic will reintroduce its Toronto route, marking a significant milestone as the airline returns to Canada after more than a decade. The Toronto-Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to London-Heathrow Airport (LHR) route will be operated using a fleet that includes the modern Airbus A330neo. This service not only reinforces Virgin Atlantic’s commitment to enhancing connectivity to the Indian subcontinent but also facilitates seamless travel for Canadians heading to popular destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Dubai, and Cape Town.
Seamless Connections for Canadian Travelers
The first phase of the expanded codeshare agreement will allow passengers to book travel from various Canadian cities directly to London on a single ticket. Cities included in this new connectivity include:
- Calgary
- Edmonton
- Vancouver
- Winnipeg
- Ottawa
This development will simplify travel plans for Canadian customers and offer a premium experience throughout their journey.
Co-location at Toronto Airport for Enhanced Convenience
To further streamline the travel experience, Virgin Atlantic and WestJet will co-locate in Terminal 3 at Toronto Airport starting February 18, 2025. This collaboration will enable easier luggage transfers between flights, enhancing the overall customer experience. The airlines will also work with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority (GTAA) and Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) to ensure seamless connections.
Statements from Airline Executives
Juha Jarvinen, Virgin Atlantic’s EVP and Chief Commercial Officer, emphasized the importance of Canada in their growth strategy. He stated, “This expanded partnership with WestJet will create seamless connectivity for our customers via our new route launching between Toronto and London.”
John Weatherill, WestJet’s Executive Vice-President and Chief Commercial Officer, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, remarking, “This expanded codeshare will simplify travel and deliver a more seamless experience for our shared guests.”
Looking Ahead: New Routes and Destinations in 2025
The year 2025 will be significant for Virgin Atlantic as it introduces several new routes. Alongside the Toronto service, the airline will launch daily flights to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in March 2025 and expand its operations to Accra, Ghana, in May 2025. By October 2025, Virgin Atlantic will also offer a three-times-weekly service to Cancun, Mexico, making it the only airline to provide direct flights on this route.
