All Nippon Airways Orders 77 New Aircraft to Boost Capacity and Modernize Fleet
All Nippon Airways (ANA) is making significant strides in its fleet enhancement strategy by placing substantial orders with the world’s leading aircraft manufacturers. The Japanese airline has committed to introducing up to 77 new aircraft into its fleet, comprising 68 firm orders and nine options. This strategic move aims to accommodate the growing passenger demand, especially on routes to Japan.
Strengthening Long-Haul Operations with New Aircraft
To bolster its long-haul capabilities, ANA has ordered 18 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, equipped with General Electric’s GEnx engines. The airline recognizes its international network as a cornerstone for future growth, particularly on key routes between Asia and North America. Ongoing improvements at Tokyo-Narita International Airport (NRT) will further support this expansion. ANA anticipates a 50% increase in capacity on these routes by the 2030 fiscal year, with available seat kilometers (ASK) expected to rise by approximately 1.5 times compared to the fiscal year 2023.
Enhancing Domestic Flexibility with Regional Jets
On the domestic front, ANA is set to integrate Embraer E-Jets into its fleet for the first time, having ordered 20 E190-E2 aircraft—15 firm orders and five options. These technologically advanced regional jets will enable ANA to respond better to fluctuations in demand while optimizing costs and enhancing overall profitability. Deliveries are projected to commence in the 2028 fiscal year.
Expanding Single-Aisle Fleet and Supporting Low-Cost Carrier Peach
In addition to the regional jets, ANA has placed orders for 14 Airbus A321neo and 12 Boeing 737-8 aircraft, including eight firm orders and four options. These aircraft will modernize ANA’s existing fleet and enhance operational efficiency.
ANA is also investing in its low-cost subsidiary, Peach Aviation, which will receive 10 Airbus A321neo aircraft and three A321XLR aircraft. This investment will allow Peach to serve longer-haul destinations while benefiting from the fuel efficiency and operational range of CFM International’s LEAP-1A engines.
Fleet Modernization Strategy and Future Growth
Furthermore, ANA has exercised purchase options secured in previous years for five Boeing 787-9 aircraft and ten Boeing 737-8s. The airline emphasizes that these acquisitions will enable it to effectively respond to market demands and resume its fleet renewal efforts that had been paused during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This order will be the catalyst for improving the profitability of domestic flights and expanding international routes, a key area for future growth,” stated Koji Shibata, President and CEO of ANA Holdings. “We aim to become an industry-leading airline with sustainable growth.”
By the end of the 2030 fiscal year, ANA plans to operate a fleet of approximately 320 aircraft, including 120 Boeing Dreamliners. The airline also projects that 91% of its fleet will consist of next-generation aircraft, underscoring its commitment to modernization and sustainability.
