Cathay Pacific, HK Express Boost Mainland China Flights in 2025
Cathay Pacific Expands Flight Frequencies to 20 Chinese Destinations Amid Rising Demand
Hong Kong’s flagship airline, Cathay Pacific, along with its sister carrier HK Express, has announced a significant increase in flight frequencies to 20 destinations across mainland China. This strategic move aims to accommodate the growing demand for travel between Hong Kong and various Chinese cities. Starting summer 2025, the two airlines will collectively operate around 300 flights per week, marking an impressive 40% rise compared to the previous summer peak.
Increased Connectivity to Key Regions
On March 27, 2025, the Cathay Group revealed its expansion plans, focusing on the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Yangtze River Delta regions—two critical areas for China’s economic growth. The airlines will enhance their flight schedules to maintain high service frequencies to major urban centers such as Beijing and Shanghai. This initiative aims to support the increasing demand for both leisure and business travel.
Flight Schedule Enhancements
-
Beijing: Cathay Pacific will operate seven daily flights between Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) and Beijing Capital International Airport (PEK), along with an additional daily flight to Beijing Daxing International Airport (PKX) via HK Express. This results in a total of 56 weekly flights to Beijing.
-
Shanghai: The service to Shanghai will see an increase to eight daily return flights to Shanghai-Pudong International Airport (PVG) and an additional 11 return flights weekly to Shanghai-Hongqiao International Airport (SHA). In total, Cathay Pacific will offer 67 return flights per week to Shanghai.
- Other Key Cities:
- Zhengzhou, Ningbo, Haikou, and Chongqing will transition from four return flights per week to daily services.
- Flights to Hangzhou will increase to four return flights per day.
- Nanjing will receive two daily flights, while Wenzhou and Wuhan will see increases to 10 and 12 flights per week, respectively.
- New direct flights from Hong Kong to Urumqi are set to launch on April 28, 2025.
Commitment to Enhanced Travel Experience
Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer of Cathay Pacific, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded flight schedule. “We are delighted to be expanding our flight schedule in the Chinese Mainland this summer, providing services to 20 passenger destinations and increased frequencies on many of our popular routes,” she stated. Lau emphasized the airline’s commitment to delivering a seamless travel experience for customers flying to, from, or via Hong Kong.
Global Network Expansion and Future Plans
Not only is Cathay Pacific enhancing its connectivity with mainland China, but the airline is also broadening its global network. In 2025, Cathay Pacific will add flights to 13 new destinations, including cities like Hyderabad, Dallas, Rome, Munich, and Brussels. Meanwhile, HK Express will introduce new services to Sendai, Nha Trang, Ishigaki, Komatsu, Cheongju, Daegu, and Miyako-Shimojishima.
In total, the Cathay Group will operate passenger services to over 100 destinations in 2025, further solidifying Hong Kong’s status as a leading international aviation hub.
