Iberia Launches New A321XLR Routes Across the Americas

Iberia Expands Its Route Network with New A321XLR Destinations in 2025

Iberia Airlines is set to enhance its global presence by introducing new routes operated by the cutting-edge Airbus A321XLR aircraft. This strategic expansion will begin in 2025, connecting Madrid-Barajas (MAD) to exciting new destinations, including San Juan de Puerto Rico (SJU), Fortaleza (FOR), and Recife (REC). With this move, Iberia aims to meet the increasing demand for international travel while providing passengers with modern and efficient flying options.

Iberia’s New Routes: Connecting Spain to the Caribbean and Brazil

Beginning on October 28, 2025, Iberia will launch a daily A321XLR service to San Juan de Puerto Rico, supplementing its existing A330 nonstop flights. This addition will raise the total weekly frequencies to eleven during the 2025/26 Winter season, making it one of the busiest routes for the airline. Notably, the Madrid to San Juan flight is expected to become the longest A321XLR route globally, with a flight time of just over nine hours.

New Brazilian Destinations: Recife and Fortaleza

Iberia will also expand its services to Brazil, with new routes to Recife and Fortaleza. These flights are scheduled to commence on December 13, 2025, and January 19, 2026, respectively. Initially, both routes will operate thrice weekly, with plans to increase to five and four weekly flights by February 2026. The introduction of these services will provide travelers from northern Brazil with a more direct link to Spain, eliminating the need to backtrack through major hubs like São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

  • Route Overview:
    • San Juan de Puerto Rico (SJU): Daily service starting October 28, 2025
    • Recife (REC): Launching December 13, 2025, with thrice-weekly frequencies
    • Fortaleza (FOR): Starting January 19, 2026, also with thrice-weekly frequencies

As of March 2025, Iberia will continue to operate two daily flights to São Paulo-Guarulhos (GRU) and five weekly flights to Rio de Janeiro Galeão (GIG).

Approval and Capacity Expansion in Brazil

The successful launch of the new Brazilian routes is contingent on receiving approval from the Brazilian aviation authority. If approved, these flights will represent a significant capacity increase in the Spain-Brazil market, enhancing travel options for passengers.

Orlando Service Launch: A New U.S. Destination

In addition to its Caribbean and Brazilian routes, Iberia is also set to debut a new service to Orlando on October 26, 2025. This route will operate four times a week using Airbus A330-300 aircraft, providing a spacious cabin configuration with 254 seats, including Business, Premium Economy, and Economy Class options.

Iberia’s Commitment to Modern Aircraft

Iberia became the launch operator of the Airbus A321XLR in November 2024, with its first service to Boston-Logan (BOS). Following this, the airline plans to introduce A321XLR flights to Washington-Dulles (IAD) as it receives additional aircraft from Airbus.

The A321XLR aircraft are part of a larger order placed by International Airlines Group (IAG), Iberia’s parent company, for a total of 14 aircraft. Of these, eight are designated for Iberia, while the remaining six will be operated by Aer Lingus.
