Indian Navy to Acquire 26 Rafale-M Fighter Aircraft in Historic Deal with France
NEW DELHI – In a significant enhancement of its aerial capabilities, the Indian Navy is set to acquire 26 Rafale-M fighter aircraft from France in a deal valued at ₹63,000 crore. This acquisition marks the first major upgrade to the Navy’s fighter fleet in over a decade, underscoring India’s commitment to bolstering its maritime defense.
The deal comprises 22 single-seater fighters and 4 double-seater trainer aircraft, which will significantly enhance the operational capacity of the Navy’s existing MiG-29K jets currently deployed on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya.

Former Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Arun Prakash highlighted the transformative impact of the Rafale jets on the Navy’s combat effectiveness. According to Admiral Prakash, “The Rafale is approximately half a generation more advanced than the MiG-29K.” He emphasized that these aircraft will dramatically enhance the Navy’s striking power across various dimensions including air defense, anti-shipping strikes, and electronic warfare.

He stated, “When we were negotiating for the Gorshkov, there were no ski-jump capable aircraft available other than the Sea Harrier.”
Despite a thorough evaluation of the Rafale, the lack of a naval variant at that time and political factors limited India’s options to the MiG-29K, which has since been operational since 2013.
Addressing the Chinese Naval Expansion in the Indian Ocean
Admiral Prakash also addressed the growing threat posed by Chinese naval forces in the Indian Ocean. He expressed confidence that China will deploy aircraft carriers to bolster their maritime presence. “They have established logistical support through facilities in Djibouti and potentially Gwadar in Pakistan,” he noted.

He argued, “Inherently, an aircraft carrier is possibly the most protected warship,” owing to its multiple layers of defense including fighter cover and radar systems.
