IndiGo Launches Two New Europe Routes from Mumbai
IndiGo Airlines Expands Long-Haul International Flights to Europe
MUMBAI—India’s leading airline, IndiGo Airlines (6E), is making headlines with its entry into the long-haul international market. The airline has announced the launch of two new exciting routes from Mumbai (BOM) to Manchester (MAN) and Amsterdam (AMS), set to start on July 1 and July 2, respectively. This strategic expansion marks a significant milestone in IndiGo’s international ambitions, enhancing its service offerings while maintaining its budget-friendly model.
Mumbai to Europe: A New Long-Haul Gateway
Mumbai – Manchester
IndiGo will commence a thrice-weekly nonstop service from Mumbai to Manchester starting July 1. This route is particularly significant due to the strong cultural and economic ties between India and the UK, especially with the large Indian diaspora in northern England.
- Flight Schedule:
- Departure from Mumbai: 04:15 AM IST
- Arrival in Manchester: 09:15 AM local time
- Return Flight from Manchester: 12:00 PM local time
- Arrival in Mumbai: 01:35 AM IST the next day
This marks IndiGo’s inaugural direct service to the United Kingdom and its second route operated with the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, reinforcing its commitment to offer affordable fares and nonstop convenience to travelers.
Mumbai – Amsterdam
Following closely, on July 2, IndiGo will launch a three-times-weekly service to Amsterdam, a key European hub for business and tourism. This route is expected to cater to the growing travel demand between India and the Netherlands, driven by trade, tourism, and student exchanges.
- Flight Schedule:
- Departure from Mumbai: 05:20 AM IST
- Arrival in Amsterdam: 11:00 AM local time
- Return Flight from Amsterdam: 01:00 PM local time
- Arrival in Mumbai: 01:55 AM IST the next day
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport provides seamless connections to the rest of Europe and North America, enhancing the travel experience for Indian passengers.
Complimentary Meals Onboard
IndiGo’s Boeing 787-9 features a two-class layout—economy and “IndiGo Stretch,” which offers additional legroom. In a notable shift from its traditional buy-on-board model, all passengers in both classes will receive complimentary hot vegetarian meals, with non-vegetarian options available for pre-booking. Additionally, alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase in economy class, while Stretch passengers may enjoy complimentary options based on fare inclusions.
Strategic Shift from Delhi to Mumbai
Originally planned from Delhi, these new long-haul routes were relocated to Mumbai due to the ongoing closure of Pakistani airspace, making westbound flights from North India operationally challenging. By shifting operations to Mumbai, IndiGo can optimize routing, minimize operational disruptions, and enhance service efficiency.
IndiGo’s Long-Haul Strategy Taking Shape
With the launch of these two major European routes, IndiGo is forging its path in the global aviation market. This strategic expansion comes at a time when demand for travel between India and Europe is on the rise, especially following the pandemic. As IndiGo continues to adapt to changing passenger expectations, further expansion into Europe is anticipated, particularly from Delhi as the airline receives additional Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
As IndiGo Airlines embarks on this new chapter, travelers can look forward to enhanced connectivity and service options in the long-haul market.
