Japan and South Korea Launch Priority Immigration Lanes for Travelers
In a groundbreaking initiative, Japan and South Korea have unveiled a new priority immigration lane program at airports aimed at facilitating smoother travel between the two nations. Announced by Tokyo’s Immigration Services Agency on May 21, 2025, this program marks a significant step as both countries commemorate six decades of normalized diplomatic relations.
The priority lanes are designed to streamline border processing for frequent travelers, making it easier for them to navigate airport procedures during peak travel times.
Understanding the Priority Immigration Lane Program
The priority immigration lane program will be in effect throughout June, providing expedited processing for eligible travelers at major airports in both countries. These dedicated lanes will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., significantly enhancing the entry experience for travelers during busy hours.
Eligible passport holders from Japan or South Korea can take advantage of the priority lanes if they have visited the other country at least once in the past year. However, travelers must complete certain pre-arrival procedures to benefit from this expedited service.
Participating Airports in the Program
The trial program will be available at four major airports, serving as vital hubs for travel between Japan and South Korea:
In Japan:
- Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)
- Fukuoka Airport (FUK)
In South Korea:
- Gimpo International Airport (GMP)
- Gimhae International Airport (PUS)
These airports are crucial for facilitating the significant passenger traffic between the two nations.
Meeting Strong Travel Demand
The introduction of priority lanes is a direct response to the booming travel demand between Japan and South Korea. In 2024, over 12 million people traveled between the two countries, emphasizing the strong bilateral movement. According to the Japan National Tourism Organization, around 2.5 million South Korean visitors entered Japan in the first quarter of this year alone, making South Korea the top international travel destination for Japanese citizens.
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
This immigration initiative comes at a time of improving relations between Japan and South Korea, following years of historical tensions. By enhancing travel convenience, both governments recognize the significance of fostering people-to-people exchanges to strengthen bilateral ties.
