Air India Ships 1,000 Tonnes of Mangoes Worldwide
Air India Transports 1,000 Tonnes of Fresh Mangoes to Global Markets
In April 2025, Tata Group-owned Air India made headlines by successfully transporting 1,000 tonnes of fresh Indian mangoes from Mumbai (BOM) to major cities across Europe, North America, and the Middle East. This impressive feat highlights the airline’s commitment to efficient cargo operations and innovative cold-chain logistics, ensuring the iconic Indian mangoes reach consumers worldwide at peak freshness.
Air India Delivers Fresh Mangoes Worldwide
Air India has solidified its role as a leader in global perishable logistics, particularly during the highly anticipated mango season. In just one month, the airline moved nearly 1,000 tonnes of mango varieties—such as Alphonso, Safeda, and Dussehri—originating primarily from Western and Northern India. The mangoes were shipped to 43 destinations across 31 countries, including bustling markets in New York (JFK), London (LHR), Frankfurt (FRA), Toronto (YYZ), San Francisco (SFO), Tokyo (NRT), and Sydney (SYD).
This surge in mango exports is part of a broader trend within Air India’s perishable cargo segment. By investing strategically in temperature-controlled infrastructure, automated handling systems, and partnerships with certified exporters, the airline ensures quality control throughout the supply chain. These advancements have further established Air India as the preferred airline for transporting fresh produce from India.
India’s Mango Craze Meets Global Demand
The demand for Indian mangoes is soaring, thanks to their renowned sweetness, unique aroma, and diverse varieties. As summer approaches, international markets eagerly await this beloved fruit. Air India is leveraging its extensive international network and cargo capacity to bridge local farms with premium outlets around the world—from gourmet stores in New York to vibrant farmers’ markets in London.
Notably, over 75% of the exported mangoes are sourced from Western India, particularly from the regions of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The logistics process begins at certified packaging centers, where mangoes undergo sorting and preparation for export under strict quality controls to comply with regulations in destination countries.
Precision Cold Chain Management Ensures Freshness
To guarantee the freshness of its mango shipments, Air India employs a robust cold-chain management system. Prior to transport, mangoes are stored in APEDA-certified temperature-controlled facilities. On the ground, cool dollies and thermal blankets shield the fruit from temperature fluctuations, while precise cargo handling minimizes damage.
"Air India treats mango shipments with the same care you’d reserve for delicate glassware," states Ramesh Mamidala, Head of Cargo at Air India. This meticulous approach to temperature regulation—both pre-flight and during transit—ensures that mangoes arrive at their destinations bursting with flavor and freshness.
With global demand for mangoes on the rise, Air India is ramping up its operations to meet increasing orders for the remainder of the 2025 season. Collaborations between exporters, freight forwarders, and cargo teams are facilitating timely deliveries, positioning Air India as a top logistics provider in the perishables segment.
As India’s mango season reaches its peak, Air India continues to deliver not just fruit but also a slice of India’s summer to consumers around the globe. This commitment to reliability, scale, and freshness in air cargo solidifies Air India’s reputation in the international market.
