Deloitte’s 2025 Airline CEO Survey Reveals Key Insights on Industry Challenges and Priorities
Global consulting giant Deloitte has unveiled its much-anticipated 2025 Airline CEO Survey, shedding light on the pressing concerns and recruitment priorities that keep airline executives awake at night. Conducted in April 2025, shortly after the announcement of new tariffs by former US President Donald Trump, this survey captures the sentiments of 32 airline CEOs from around the world, providing valuable insights into the industry’s current landscape.
According to the survey, economic and market conditions were highlighted as the top risk factor by 50% of the CEOs surveyed. Geopolitical instability closely followed, with 47% of respondents citing it as a significant concern. Supply chain disruptions were also a key issue, with 40% of executives acknowledging its impact on future growth and stability. Interestingly, concerns surrounding tariffs and pandemics were less pronounced, with only 10% and 3% of CEOs, respectively, ranking them among their top worries.

Deloitte noted, “The potential for fragile consumer and business confidence, escalating operating costs, and unpredictable demand patterns have replaced COVID-19–induced disruptions as the top sources of risk.”
Airline CEOs Focus on Operational Excellence
When it comes to priorities for improvement over the next 12 months, operational excellence topped the list, cited by 66% of airline CEOs. This was closely followed by cost control and financial health (66%), and enhancing customer experience (55%). Deloitte observed, “After years of rapid growth and workforce expansion, many carriers are rebalancing toward leaner, more efficient operations.”
Workforce Initiatives in the Airline Industry
In a noteworthy revelation, the survey also examined the top workforce initiatives airline leaders are prioritizing. Leadership development and succession planning emerged as the leading focus, with 53% of CEOs emphasizing its importance. Other significant initiatives included employee engagement and well-being (47%), while only 30% identified pilot recruitment as a top priority.
Deloitte explained, “Interestingly, some headline-grabbing concerns of recent years, like pilot recruitment and retention, have receded slightly, with only 30% of CEOs listing it as a current priority.”
Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability remains a critical focus area for airline leaders. A striking 80% of CEOs selected Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) as one of their top three initiatives aimed at achieving sustainability goals. Following this, block time fuel optimization was chosen by 63%, and fleet modernization was prioritized by 53% of respondents.
