Airline Industry Forecast for 2025: Growth in Passengers and Cargo Despite Challenges
The airline industry is set to achieve significant growth in 2025, with airlines expected to transport more passengers and cargo than in 2024. This optimistic outlook comes despite previous forecasts being tempered by trade tensions and fluctuating consumer confidence. Willie Walsh, the Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), shared these insights during the 81st IATA Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Delhi from June 1 to June 3, 2025.
Walsh emphasized that while the first half of 2025 has introduced substantial uncertainties to global markets, the airline sector is poised for a better year overall. "By many measures, including net profits, it will still be a better year for airlines than 2024, although slightly below our previous projections," he stated.
Record Revenues Projected for 2025
According to IATA’s latest financial outlook, total airline revenues are forecasted to reach a record $979 billion in 2025, marking a 1.3% increase from 2024. This growth in revenue is expected to outpace a 1% rise in total expenses, thereby supporting industry profitability. Here are some key financial projections:
- Net Profits: Expected to rise to $36 billion, up from $32.4 billion in 2024.
- Operating Profits: Anticipated to increase to $66 billion, compared to $61.9 billion in 2024.
Despite this positive outlook, Walsh cautioned that the profit of $36 billion translates to just $7.20 per passenger per segment. "Any new taxes or unexpected demand shocks could quickly test the industry’s resilience," he warned.
Passenger Growth and Revenue Insights
Passenger revenues are projected to hit $693 billion in 2025, reflecting a 1.6% increase from the previous year. Growth in passenger numbers, measured in Revenue Passenger Kilometers (RPK), is expected to reach 5.8%. This growth underscores the ongoing recovery in air travel demand.
Aircraft Deliveries and Supply Chain Challenges
Aircraft deliveries are also on the rise, with 1,692 aircraft scheduled for delivery in 2025—the highest since 2018. However, this figure is still about 26% below last year’s forecasts due to persistent supply chain challenges. The IATA outlook warns of potential downward revisions, primarily due to shortages of spare parts and ongoing engine issues.
Walsh expressed frustration over these challenges, stating, “Manufacturers continue to let their airline customers down. It is unacceptable that these problems could persist until the end of the decade.”
Public Confidence in Air Travel
Despite the challenges facing the airline industry, public confidence in air travel remains robust. A poll commissioned by IATA in April 2025, which surveyed 6,500 travelers from 15 countries, revealed that:
- 97% of travelers were satisfied with their travel experiences.
- 89% believe that air travel enhances their lives.
- 81% appreciate the variety of choices available for travel planning.
- 78% view air travel as good value for money.
Furthermore, IATA is committed to achieving net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050, a goal that resonates with travelers, as 81% expressed confidence in the industry’s commitment to this ambitious target.
