Lufthansa Declines Investment in Air Europa Following Air France-KLM Departure
Lufthansa Group has decided to step back from discussions aimed at acquiring a stake in the Spanish airline Air Europa, as reported by Reuters. This decision follows closely on the heels of Air France-KLM’s own choice to halt negotiations for investment in the airline.
A Lufthansa spokesperson stated, “After thorough analysis and intensive negotiations, we have decided against taking a stake in Air Europa at this time.”
The Hidalgo family, through their Globalia travel consortium, currently holds 80% of Air Europa’s shares, making them the primary stakeholders. Meanwhile, International Airlines Group (IAG) owns the remaining 20%.
Turkish Airlines is reportedly still in talks with Air Europa and is now viewed as a leading contender for potential investment. The airline confirmed in June 2025 that it was engaging in “non-binding discussions” regarding investment opportunities with Air Europa.
On July 31, 2025, Air France-KLM CEO Benjamin Smith disclosed that the group had “ended the discussions” with Air Europa. This decision was influenced by a failure to reach an agreement with Globalia, ultimately leading to their withdrawal from the negotiations.
Reports indicate that Air France-KLM proposed a significant investment of $347 million (€300 million) for a 51% stake in Air Europa. Interested bidders were asked to submit binding offers by July 2025.
It seems the landscape of airline investments is shifting; what are your thoughts on the future of Air Europa?
