IndiGo Launches Athens as Its Inaugural European A321XLR Route

IndiGo revealed on September 15, 2025, that its Airbus A321XLR aircraft will debut in Europe with a service to Athens (ATH). This marks an exciting development for the Indian low-cost airline.

The inaugural flight is expected in early 2026, as IndiGo awaits the delivery of its first A321XLR, with a total of 69 on order. The Greek capital will benefit from six weekly direct flights to India, featuring three connections from both Mumbai (BOM) and Delhi (DEL).

The A321XLR will have a seating capacity of 195, which includes 12 “Stretch” business class seats and 183 economy class seats. This configuration caters to a variety of travelers, enhancing the overall travel experience.

IndiGo will go head-to-head with the Greek carrier Aegean Airlines, which also intends to introduce nonstop flights between Athens and Mumbai and Delhi starting in March 2026. Aegean’s aircraft will be configured for a lower capacity of 134 passengers, with a focus on providing a comfortable journey.

Anticipation was high in the aviation industry regarding Athens being one of the first routes for the A321XLR, a sentiment echoed by IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers in a recent interview. Following Athens, destinations in southeastern Europe are likely to be added to the airline’s route map.

Earlier in 2025, IndiGo extended its European reach beyond Istanbul by launching flights to Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS) and Manchester (MAN) using Boeing 787-9 aircraft leased from Norse Atlantic Airways. This was a significant step in broadening its international presence.

Before commencing flights to Athens, IndiGo plans to start another European route to London-Heathrow (LHR) in October 2025, also utilizing its Dreamliner fleet.
