Spirit Airlines Lays Off 1,800 Flight Attendants During Bankruptcy Challenges

MIRAMAR- Spirit Airlines (NK), the ultra-low-cost airline based near Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL), is set to furlough approximately 1,800 flight attendants as part of cost-cutting measures following its second bankruptcy filing this year.

This decision impacts around one-third of the airline’s cabin crew and is part of a broader strategy to reduce fleet size and stabilize operations.

In a memo to employees, COO John Bendoraitis discussed the difficult choices ahead, highlighting the need to adjust the network, fleet, and workforce for long-term sustainability.

As reported by CNBC, this strategy follows recent warnings from CEO Dave Davis about potential job cuts as Spirit grapples with financial difficulties.

Spirit Airlines Furloughs 1,800 Flight Attendants

Spirit Airlines (NK) is facing mounting challenges following its Chapter 11 filing in August 2025. This bankruptcy marks its second in less than a year, following an earlier filing in March 2025 that aimed to address $795 million in debts.

The company is now targeting $100 million in labor cost savings, starting with the furlough of flight attendants to align with decreased flight operations.

Executives forecast a 25% capacity reduction for November 2025 compared to the previous year, adjusting routes to prioritize high-demand markets from Fort Lauderdale Airport (FLL).

This restructuring complements earlier voluntary leaves; around 800 flight attendants currently on unpaid leave maintain their medical benefits during this time.

However, Bendoraitis indicated that the voluntary leave option has reached its limit, necessitating a shift to structured furloughs.

The Association of Flight Attendants-CWA reports that eligible crew members can choose between voluntary furloughs of six or twelve months, with healthcare coverage still intact.

Involuntary furloughs will commence on December 1, 2025, although the exact number will depend on how many flight attendants opt for voluntary leave. The union is actively working to secure preferential job interviews for affected members with other airlines.

Spirit Airlines has not released additional statements on these plans, but internal communications emphasize ongoing negotiations to mitigate disruptions.

Pilot Negotiations and Labor Impacts

Spirit Airlines (NK) is also implementing cost controls for its pilots, with plans to furlough hundreds and seek $100 million in concessions from the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA).

Bendoraitis has notified the union about management’s intention to hold daily discussions to reach a consensus by October 1, 2025. However, under bankruptcy provisions, the airline has the option to bypass existing labor contracts, which could expedite changes.

Beginning October 1, 2025, around 270 pilots will face furloughs, and approximately 140 captains will be demoted to first officers by November 1. These moves are directly linked to reductions in the fleet that include aircraft sales and route cancellations, as the airline deals with cash flow challenges and weak demand in the domestic leisure sector.

Union leaders caution members that this bankruptcy will require heightened awareness compared to the previous filing.

Overall, these initiatives are transforming Spirit’s operations, prioritizing efficiency over expansion. While the airline continues service to over 80 destinations across the US, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and Colombia, it will operate with fewer flights and personnel.

Analysts see these measures as crucial for survival in a market saturated with options, where low fares put pressure on budget airlines like Spirit Airlines.
