Etihad Launches Seasonal Summer Flights from Abu Dhabi to Zanzibar

Etihad Airways, the airline based in Abu Dhabi, has recently unveiled plans to launch a new route connecting its main hub to the beautiful island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. This service will operate three times a week, utilizing the airline’s Airbus A320 fleet. The introduction of this route marks the return of flights to what’s often called “the legendary spice island” of the Indian Ocean.

Starting from June 14 and running until September 6, 2026, Etihad will offer four weekly flights between Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport (AUH) and Zanzibar’s Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ). According to the airline, this route will provide an exceptional opportunity for travelers looking to enjoy stunning beaches, vibrant waters, and rich Swahili culture.

Zanzibar becomes the 30th destination for Etihad announced in 2025, following the recent addition of Palma in the Balearic Islands. The airline attributes its decision to reinstate this route to an expanded and improved European network, which facilitates increased feeder traffic into Abu Dhabi.

With efficient connections established by two major European banks, the accessibility of Zanzibar has significantly improved for travelers coming from Europe and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. This seasonal service is strategically timed to meet the summer demand for travel to this stunning destination.

The route is approximately 2,350 miles (3,760 km) long, with a flight duration of around four hours and 40 minutes. Etihad’s Airbus A320 fleet typically accommodates eight business-class passengers and 150 in economy.

Flights from Abu Dhabi are set to leave on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays, designated as EY791, departing at 09:10 AM and arriving in Zanzibar at 1:50 PM local time. The return flight, EY792, will leave Zanzibar at 5:15 PM, landing back in Abu Dhabi at 12:30 AM the following day.

Antonoaldo Neves, the CEO of Etihad Airways, expressed enthusiasm about the return of Zanzibar to their network. He highlighted the island’s appeal, which ranges from renowned beaches and spice markets to a rich cultural tapestry. Neves emphasized the excitement among passengers to have this destination accessible once again.

Zanzibar, a stunning part of Tanzania’s archipelago, is well-known for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, spice farms, and breathtaking beaches. It offers a unique mix of relaxation and adventure, perfect for tourists looking to explore underwater coral reefs or navigate its historic alleys. Moreover, it serves as a convenient jumping-off point for iconic safari experiences in East Africa, making it an ideal combination holiday with adventures in the Serengeti or Kilimanjaro.

In recent announcements, Etihad also revealed plans for a new route to Palma De Mallorca, marking its 29th destination for 2025. This route will provide the only direct link between Asia and Palma, further enhancing travel options to Ibiza and the broader Balearic Islands. The new three-weekly flight to Palma is set to begin on June 12, 2026, operating until mid-September 2026.
