IndiGo Expands with 2 New Routes to Europe from Delhi

DELHI- IndiGo Airlines (6E) is set to expand its offerings in the European long-haul market by introducing two new routes to the UK as part of its Winter 2025/26 schedule.

The airline will commence operations on the Mumbai-London Heathrow and Delhi-Manchester routes, marking its debut at the UK’s busiest airport and entering a highly competitive segment of the India-London travel market.

IndiGo Expands European Routes

New Services to London Heathrow

IndiGo has secured operational slots at London Heathrow through a leasing arrangement with Virgin Atlantic. The airline will have access to 14 weekly slots, split evenly between arrivals and departures, set to operate from Terminal 3 between October 26, 2025, and March 28, 2026.

The airline plans to utilize Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, which can accommodate up to 338 passengers. This wet-leasing arrangement enables IndiGo to enter the long-haul market while mitigating significant fleet investment risks as it adapts to the complexities of operating longer routes.

The Mumbai-London route is particularly lucrative, with direct competition expected from Air India, Virgin Atlantic, and British Airways, which currently operate seven flights daily. IndiGo aims to disrupt the market by introducing its low-cost pricing model to a sector dominated by full-service carriers.

Delhi to Manchester

In addition to the Heathrow route, IndiGo also plans to launch a Delhi-Manchester service, scheduled to begin on November 15, 2025. This route is expected to operate four times a week, in tandem with a three-flight service from Mumbai to Manchester.

The flight schedule is as follows:

  • Flight 6E033: Delhi 04:05 → Manchester 09:30 (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday)
  • Flight 6E034: Manchester 11:15 → Delhi 02:10+1 (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday)

This route will make IndiGo the only Indian airline offering direct services between Delhi and Manchester, similar to the Mumbai-Manchester connection. The service is tailored for VFR (Visiting Friends and Relatives) traffic, students, and business travelers.

Given Manchester’s significant Indian diaspora, the airline aims to connect to cities like Birmingham, Leeds, and Liverpool while facilitating efficient overnight returns to Delhi for passengers.

IndiGo is strategically developing its European network, which previously emphasized short- and medium-haul routes. This shift allows the airline to leverage its Gulf and Southeast Asian connections to funnel traffic toward its upcoming European services.

Despite existing competition, the India-UK market continues to thrive, driven by business travel, tourism, education, and cultural ties. IndiGo’s entry could prompt existing airlines to revise their pricing strategies, potentially leading to increased traffic due to reduced fares.

Acquiring slots at Heathrow is notoriously challenging. The lease agreement with Virgin Atlantic allows IndiGo to gauge the market before deciding on future expansions or additional European destinations if successful.

Competitive Landscape and Operational Approach

The India-UK market is primarily dominated by carriers such as Air India and various UK airlines, which maintain several daily flights to London. Air India also services Birmingham, while British Airways and Virgin Atlantic focus mainly on routes to Delhi and Mumbai.

Virgin Atlantic’s indirect role through slot leasing is noteworthy, as the airline may view IndiGo as a feeder partner, potentially enhancing its own network through codeshare options.

Middle Eastern carriers like Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Etihad hold a significant market share in the India-UK sector. IndiGo’s new direct flights could appeal to cost-conscious travelers who are willing to trade some service elements for more affordable ticket prices.

New International Routes from the Delhi Hub

In its latest network expansion, IndiGo is also focusing on enhancing connections from its Delhi Hub to Southeast Asia by introducing new international destinations and increasing service frequencies.

Delhi – Denpasar, Bali (Indonesia)

IndiGo will launch a daily service between Delhi and Denpasar, Bali, starting October 24, 2025. This new direct connection provides Indian travelers with easy access to Bali, a popular destination.

The flights will utilize Airbus A320 aircraft, featuring a brief refueling stop in Bhubaneswar. This addition makes IndiGo the third airline to offer routes to Bali after Bengaluru and Mumbai. The airline will compete directly with Air India for passengers.

Delhi – Krabi (Thailand)

Additionally, IndiGo is expanding its Thai services by introducing four weekly flights between Delhi and Krabi starting October 26, 2025. These flights will operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays, establishing a direct link to this beautiful beach destination in Thailand.

Known for its pristine beaches and adventure tourism, Krabi serves as an alternative to Phuket. IndiGo will adjust its Bangalore flights to accommodate the new Delhi services while maintaining routes to Bangkok and Phuket, further solidifying its Thai connectivity.

Delhi – Bangkok (Increased Frequency)

Due to strong demand, IndiGo will increase its service on the Delhi–Bangkok route to twice-daily flights starting October 26, 2025. This enhancement will significantly increase capacity between the two cities, positioning Delhi as a vital hub for international connectivity.

IndiGo operates eight daily flights to Bangkok from various Indian cities, catering to both tourism and regional transit needs. This increase ensures that IndiGo continues to meet the robust travel demand between India and Thailand.

Conclusion

IndiGo’s extensive domestic network offers a unique advantage by generating traffic from various Indian cities, something that many competitors lack.

With a substantial domestic market share, IndiGo can efficiently connect passengers from tier-2 and tier-3 cities in India to European destinations through its hubs in Delhi and Mumbai— a capability not easily matched by international airlines.

The strategy of testing new European routes using leased aircraft mirrors practices seen in other low-cost carriers that have ventured into long-haul markets. While there are challenges to making long-haul low-cost operations feasible, IndiGo appears poised to navigate this landscape effectively.
