United Airlines Terminates Flight Attendant Following Houston Passenger Altercation

CHICAGO- United Airlines (UA) has terminated the employment of a flight attendant following an altercation involving a passenger at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).

The airline confirmed this decision after the employee, a known union advocate, recorded herself confronting Houston Independent School District Superintendent Mike Miles during an off-duty visit to the lounge.

Terminated Flight Attendant’s Confrontation

Virginia “Ginny” Stogner McDavid, a veteran flight attendant and union representative for United Airlines, faced dismissal after a heated exchange with Superintendent Mike Miles, who was a paying customer at that time. The encounter occurred inside the United Club at Houston (IAH).

McDavid, while off duty and out of uniform, recorded herself accosting Miles, later sharing the video on social media.

In the footage, she criticized Miles for “ruining the school district” and instructed him to “get out of town.” This prompted a formal complaint submitted to United Airlines, reportedly from a Houston ISD administrator’s district email.

The internal investigation resulted in McDavid’s termination under the airline’s Working Together and Social Media Policy, which permits dismissal for actions detrimental to the airline’s reputation.

Meanwhile, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA (AFA-CWA) has appealed the decision, claiming that McDavid was acting as a private individual instead of a representative of United Airlines during the incident.

Role of Houston Superintendent and His Response

Superintendent Mike Miles, who previously led the Dallas Independent School District, was brought on to oversee Houston ISD following a state takeover due to ongoing academic and leadership challenges.

His leadership style has been a source of controversy, driven by reforms that tie educator compensation to student performance metrics.

In a public statement, Houston ISD acknowledged the encounter and classified McDavid’s language as “vulgar and aggressive.” The district clarified that any disciplinary measures against the United Airlines employee pertain solely to the airline.

McDavid’s Political and Union Involvement

Virginia McDavid’s extensive background in both the airline industry and political activism has attracted significant public interest. She previously held the position of county president for the AFL-CIO Labor Assembly in Houston and served as the government affairs chair for United’s flight attendants’ union.

Her career also includes a role as the legislative and political coordinator for a regional body representing workers from several states.

In 2008, she ran as the Democratic candidate for Texas House District 138, although she did not win. More recently, her participation in the 2024 Democratic National Convention and her controversial social media presence have contributed to shaping her public perception following the incident.

United’s Expectations for Employee Conduct

United Airlines emphasizes the importance of its Working Together and Social Media Guidelines, which set clear expectations for employee conduct both on duty and off duty. Actions perceived to harm the airline’s reputation may lead to disciplinary action, including termination.

Although McDavid contended that she was off duty and did not present herself as a flight attendant during the incident, the location of the confrontation within a United facility, targeting a United passenger, was viewed as a violation of established policy.

Industry analysts suggest that United’s actions reflect a broader trend among major airlines, where employees are held accountable for their conduct if it has the potential to damage the airline’s public image.
