Remembering Emirates Airlines’ First Flight: A Tribute to Pakistani Pilots
DUBAI – Emirates Airline (EK) recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, reflecting on its origins as a global aviation leader. The moment highlighted the contributions of Captain Fazle Ghani, the Pakistani pilot who was at the helm of the inaugural flight from Dubai (DXB) to Karachi (KHI).
On October 25, 1985, Captain Ghani departed on Emirates Flight EK600, which marked not just the airline’s first journey but also the beginning of a remarkable journey that now covers six continents.

Emirates Celebrates 40 Years of First Flight
Prior to the first flight, the UAE sought assistance from Pakistan to help create its national airline. Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) provided essential technical support, leasing two aircraft—an Airbus A300B4-200 and a Boeing 737-300. They also sent an experienced team to Dubai, as highlighted by reports.
Among these experts was Captain Fazle Ghani, who had been a senior pilot for PIA. He was appointed as the Project Director and Chief Pilot for the inaugural Emirates operations.
Captain Ghani arrived in Dubai on October 1, 1985, where he met with Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and Maurice Flanagan, the first Managing Director of Emirates.
In the ensuing weeks, pilots and engineers from Pakistan worked diligently to conduct test flights and refine procedures to prepare for the launch day.
Despite facing resource limitations, the team’s commitment was unwavering. Ghani humorously recalled early challenges, such as crew members wearing mismatched uniforms, yet they remained focused on safety and punctuality.

Karachi: The Symbolic First Destination
Selecting Karachi (KHI) as the inaugural destination for Emirates was both a pragmatic and significant choice. This short Dubai-Karachi flight symbolized the close ties between the two nations and acknowledged Pakistan’s vital role in helping the UAE establish its airline.
Flight EK600, piloted by Captain Ghani, successfully departed from Dubai and made aviation history by landing safely in Karachi. Later that same day, another Emirates flight to Mumbai (BOM), commanded by Captain Ejaz ul Haq, completed the launch schedule.
PIA’s then-chief, Air Marshal Arshad Malik, referred to Captain Ghani as the “lead founder pilot of Emirates,” recognizing his exceptional leadership in setting a strong foundation for the airline’s future success.

Honoring a Legacy That Still Inspires
In 2018, Emirates honored Captain Ghani by inviting him as a special guest when the airline operated its first Airbus A380 flight to Pakistan, landing in Islamabad (ISB).
Standing beside the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the respected pilot expressed pride in seeing the airline grow from two leased planes to a global institution.
Captain Fazle Ghani may have passed away in Swabi, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, but his legacy lives on in Emirates’ ongoing success and the multitude of pilots he trained. His contributions remain integral to the airline’s narrative, underscoring that great journeys often commence with courage, vision, and collaboration.

From Two Aircraft to a Global Network
Four decades later, Emirates (EK) has evolved from modest beginnings with the support of Pakistan International Airlines to becoming one of the world’s leading airlines, serving over 140 cities across six continents.
As it marked its 40th anniversary, Emirates paid tribute to the pioneers who helped launch its first flight. “The passion, skill, and determination of early aviators like Captain Fazle Ghani remain at the heart of Emirates’ story. Their legacy continues in every flight we operate today,” the airline stated.
