Hainan Airlines Welcomes China’s First Airbus A330-900neo Delivery

Hainan Airlines has proudly welcomed its first Airbus A330-900neo into its fleet, becoming the very first operator of this aircraft type in mainland China. The new aircraft, designated B-32MU, made its journey from Airbus’s facility in Toulouse, France, landing in Haikou, China on November 1, 2025.

This delivery marks a significant achievement for both Hainan Airlines and Airbus. For the airline, it signifies an important phase in its fleet modernization initiative following a recent restructuring and network enhancement. For Airbus, this delivery heralds the introduction of the A330neo in one of the world’s most crucial widebody markets, solidifying its strategy to enhance its footprint in Asia’s long-haul sector.

The Airbus A330-900neo is equipped with advanced Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines and represents the latest iteration of the successful A330 lineage. With features like sophisticated composite wingtips, improved aerodynamics, and an upgraded cabin designed for enhanced efficiency and passenger comfort, this aircraft is a leap forward. It boasts a range of approximately 7,350 nautical miles, allowing airlines to connect China with Europe, Australia, the Middle East, and key domestic routes, such as Beijing and Shenzhen.

The new A330-900neo has a capacity of 301 seats arranged across two classes: 24 in business and 277 in economy. Hainan Airlines plans to employ this aircraft on a variety of international and domestic long-haul routes, adhering to its broader strategy of fleet modernization while reinstating vital intercontinental services that were suspended during the pandemic.

Hainan Airlines has been operating earlier models of the A330, such as the A330-200 and A330-300, in addition to its Boeing 787 Dreamliners. The introduction of the A330-900neo serves as a link between the current A330 fleet and the advanced technology of next-generation widebody models, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787. The shared cockpit and systems among the A330 family facilitate a seamless transition for pilot training and aircraft maintenance.

Based in Haikou on Hainan Island, Hainan Airlines boasts a comprehensive domestic and international network with hubs situated in Haikou, Beijing, and Shenzhen. Founded in 1993, the airline enjoyed rapid expansion during the 2000s, becoming part of the former HNA Group. Known for its premium service, it extends its reach to destinations across Asia, Europe, and North America. Following significant restructuring amid HNA’s bankruptcy in 2021, the airline now operates under the new ownership of Liaoning Fangda Group, focusing on operational stability and efficiency.

For Airbus, successfully delivering the first A330-900neo to a mainland Chinese airline reflects the ongoing demand for midsize twin-engine widebodies, as carriers modernize their long-haul fleets. The A330 family has established itself as one of the most popular widebody options in China, with a variety of operators including Air China, China Eastern, and China Southern. While Airbus manufactures its A320 models in Tianjin, all A330s are produced at its headquarters in Toulouse.

Earlier in 2025, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) granted certification for the A330neo, paving the way for local airlines to commence deliveries. Additional A330-900neos are anticipated to enter service with Chinese airlines and leasing firms in the upcoming year as the demand for international travel continues to rise.
