Air Canada Set to Resume Flights Following Union’s Return-to-Work Agreement

Air Canada has announced plans to gradually resume its operations following a mediated agreement with the union representing 10,000 flight attendants who went on strike.

This strike lasted four days, causing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and significant disruptions for numerous travelers across Canada.

In a statement released on August 19, 2025, the airline mentioned that mediation discussions started with the understanding that the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) had committed to the immediate return of flight attendants to work.

Interestingly, the announcement followed a refusal by the striking flight attendants to return as ordered by the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) on August 18, 2025.

Michael Rousseau, the CEO of Air Canada, emphasized the complexities involved in restarting operations for such a major carrier. He requested patience and understanding from customers during this transitional period.

Air Canada also noted that it would refrain from commenting on the new agreement until the ratification process is complete. During this phase or under binding arbitration, there will be no strikes or lockouts, allowing customers to confidently plan their travel with the airline.

Airline warns of cancellations as service stabilizes

The airline announced that initial flights would start on the evening of August 19, 2025. However, passengers should prepare for a potential waiting period of seven to ten days before reaching full, regular service levels due to the repositioning of aircraft and crew.

During this recovery period, some flights are likely to be canceled as Air Canada works towards stabilizing its schedule.

Rousseau expressed heartfelt apologies for the disruptions faced by customers. “The suspension of our service is an extremely difficult scenario for our customers. Our priority now is to get them moving as swiftly as possible,” he stated.

Passengers with confirmed bookings for flights that are still operating should head to the airport, but it’s advisable that they check the flight status beforehand.

To accommodate those affected by cancellations, Air Canada is providing various options, including full refunds, future travel credits, and the possibility to rebook on other airlines, though availability might be limited due to the busy summer travel season.

Impact of the strike

The airline also noted that it would suspend guidance regarding its third-quarter and full-year 2025 operational results as a consequence of the strike.

In another statement, Air Canada expressed deep regret about the disruption caused to its customers, stakeholders, and the communities it serves.

The strike began on August 16, 2025, after CUPE rejected Air Canada’s latest job offer, made on August 11, 2025, which they deemed inadequate due to concerns about inflation, market value, and minimum wage standards.
