Virgin Atlantic Reports Return to Profitability in 2024: Key Financial Highlights and Future Plans
Virgin Atlantic has made headlines with its impressive financial recovery, reporting a Profit Before Tax and Exceptional Items of £20 million in its 2024 financial results. The airline carried 5.6 million passengers, maintaining a load factor of 77.3%. Notably, Virgin Atlantic operated 24,832 sectors with an average of 43 aircraft, demonstrating improved fleet utilization and operational efficiency.
Despite facing operational challenges due to the limited availability of Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines, Virgin Atlantic achieved an impressive flight completion factor of 98.6% and was recognized as the “most punctual airline in the UK.”
Financial Position: Strengthening the Balance Sheet
At the close of 2024, Virgin Atlantic reported a robust cash position of £443 million, an increase of £37 million from the previous year. The airline successfully paid down £174 million of pandemic-related debt, reducing its total pandemic debt by £500 million since 2022. Additionally, Virgin Atlantic completed £485 million of debt financing on improved terms during 2024.
Virgin Atlantic Holidays also contributed to the airline’s financial success, carrying 255,000 holidaymakers and generating £517 million in revenue, up from £468 million in 2023. Furthermore, Virgin Atlantic Cargo secured the number one market share position out of the UK, operating 199 million tonnes of cargo and generating £236 million in revenue, significantly exceeding the previous year’s figures.

In July 2024, Virgin Atlantic completed a major fleet transformation by confirming an order for seven Airbus A330-900s, bringing its A330neo fleet to 19. By 2028, the airline aims to operate 45 next-generation aircraft with an average age of just 6.9 years.
In addition to fleet enhancements, Virgin Atlantic’s Flying Club introduced Unlimited Availability, allowing members to pay for any seat using Virgin Points, making it the first UK loyalty program of its kind. The airline also launched a redesigned website, unifying Flights and Holidays for a more streamlined user experience.
