United Airlines Introduces Exciting Fresh Appetizers for Economy Class on Transatlantic Flights
CHICAGO– United Airlines (UA) is set to revamp its international economy service by introducing fresh packaged appetizers in place of pretzels on flights between Europe and the United States starting September 2025.
This initiative is aimed at enhancing the dining experience in economy class without prolonging the overall service. Passengers traveling on transatlantic routes can expect a multi-course setup reminiscent of what is usually reserved for business class.

United Enhances Transatlantic Meals
Internal communications shared with flight attendants indicate that United Airlines (UA) will implement a revamped three-step meal process in economy class. Instead of offering pretzels (on flights from the USA) or breadsticks (on flights from Europe), the flight crews will now serve a fresh packaged appetizer along with beverages at the start of the meal.
The new meal sequence will encompass:
- Pre-meal service: A beverage and starter cart that includes cutlery, salad, dressing, bread, butter, a packaged appetizer, and dessert.
- Collection as needed: Crews will clear trays to get ready for the main course.
- Main meal service: A beverage and entrée cart offering warm entrées served on black trays with various options.
This structure closely mirrors the international economy service provided by Delta Air Lines (DL) but adds components like salad and bread, which Delta does not include.

Exceptions to the New Service
Not every United (UA) flight will adopt the new meal sequence. There are two main exceptions:
- Late-night departures: Flights scheduled to take off after 8:00 PM will continue to utilize the single-tray method.
- Aircraft constraints: Flights on the Boeing 767-300 will maintain the existing service due to limitations in crew ratios and galley space.
Moreover, United is testing a more refined bread service. On select routes, such as those from Los Angeles (LAX) and Washington Dulles (IAD) to London Heathrow (LHR), dinner rolls may be offered from a basket rather than being individually wrapped.

Food Quality in Economy Class
While meal service may not be the top priority for most airline passengers, the quality of food can certainly impact customer loyalty. United’s latest initiative reflects a broader trend of airlines exploring ways to enhance long-haul economy experiences.
For instance, JetBlue Airways (B6) previously provided fresh and diverse meals on its transatlantic flights before reducing hot entrée options.
Already, United offers commendable mid-flight and pre-arrival meal choices, such as hot sandwiches and complete breakfast options on flights between the West Coast and Europe.
With fresh appetizers added to the initial service, United aims to further distinguish itself from rivals like American Airlines (AA) and Delta Air Lines (DL).

The Takeaway
This update marks a significant shift in how United presents its economy service. The airline aims to enhance customer satisfaction through a more thoughtful dining experience, potentially fostering brand loyalty even among those who do not fly in premium cabins.
CEO Scott Kirby emphasizes the significance of nurturing “sticky” loyalty, and improving meal service plays a key role in this strategy.
