Sir Richard Branson Unveils New CEO for Virgin Atlantic Airline
Virgin Atlantic has recently revealed a significant leadership change within the airline. Corneel Koster will step into the role of CEO on January 1, 2026, succeeding Shai Weiss, who has been at the helm since January 2019.
Sir Richard Branson, the founder of Virgin Atlantic, made the announcement on October 13, 2025. He expressed gratitude for Weiss’s exceptional performance over the past seven years. “Shai has done an outstanding job,” Branson noted, commending his vision and dedication towards enhancing the airline’s reputation in the industry.
Branson also warmly welcomed Koster as the new CEO, highlighting his embodiment of the Virgin spirit, which is characterized by boldness and a readiness to challenge the norms. “We look forward to this exciting new chapter,” he remarked.
Koster, who returned to Virgin Atlantic in 2019 as Chief Customer and Operating Officer, played a crucial role in ensuring the airline’s safe and efficient operation. His contributions during the pandemic have been vital to the airline’s recovery and enhanced reliability.
Additionally, Koster has been instrumental in the introduction of the Airbus A330neo and has driven significant digital transformation within the company. Beyond Virgin Atlantic, he has held prominent positions at Delta Air Lines, Aeroméxico, and KLM.
In his statement, Koster expressed his deep appreciation for Virgin Atlantic, describing it as a privilege to become CEO. He emphasized the airline’s commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences and staying true to the challenger spirit instilled by Branson. “I’m determined we carry that spirit forward,” he affirmed.
Koster also took a moment to thank the Virgin Atlantic Board for their trust and to acknowledge Weiss for his leadership and friendship. He feels honored to lead the talented teams into this new chapter.
Shai Weiss originally joined the airline as Chief Financial Officer in 2014 before moving into the Chief Commercial Officer role. Under his leadership, Virgin Atlantic returned to profitability and achieved high customer satisfaction ratings, earning recognition as the UK’s only Global Five Star operator by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX).
Reflecting on his tenure, Weiss stated, “I leave Virgin Atlantic full of pride, knowing I have played a part in its bright red history.” He recognized the significant transformations the airline underwent during his time and set the groundwork for future opportunities as a premium flag carrier.
