Malaysia Aviation Group Plans 2,400 Flights for Chinese New Year Celebrations
Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) is set to operate over 2,400 flights during the Chinese New Year travel season, responding to the rising demand for domestic travel across the nation.
The festive flight schedule will run from February 11 to 23, 2026, featuring nearly 198 additional services through MAG’s two airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Firefly, to accommodate the influx of travelers during one of Malaysia’s peak travel periods.
During this timeframe, Malaysia Airlines plans to operate up to 1,498 flights, inclusive of 130 extra services. Firefly is expected to add up to 962 flights from February 13 to 23, along with an additional 68 services to cater to festive travelers.
Focus on Domestic Homecoming Routes
The enhanced schedule primarily focuses on vital domestic routes linking Peninsular Malaysia with East Malaysia. Notable destinations include Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Kuching, Miri, Sibu, and Bintulu. These routes see a surge in demand as Malaysians journey home to spend time with family during the celebrations.
This expansion reflects MAG’s commitment to adapting to seasonal travel trends, ensuring reliable connectivity during this high-demand festive period.
Government-Supported Subsidized Fares
In support of Malaysian government initiatives for festive travel, both Malaysia Airlines and Firefly will introduce subsidized fares for journeys between Kuala Lumpur and select East Malaysian locations from February 13 to 16, 2026.
Malaysia Airlines is set to offer subsidized one-way fares reaching up to RM569 (approximately US$141) from Kuala Lumpur to various destinations, including Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, and Kuching, among others.
Meanwhile, Firefly will provide subsidized one-way fares of up to RM548 (around US$136) for flights from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu and several other locations.
These subsidized fares aim to reduce travel expenses, giving more individuals access to the expanded flight capacity during this busy holiday period.
Additional Offerings
For those looking to travel beyond Malaysia, MAG’s Global New Year campaign is available until January 20, 2026, for journeys through November 30, 2026. The promotion features round-trip fares starting at RM159, with an additional 5% discount for Enrich loyalty program members.
Travelers on Malaysia Airlines and Firefly can enjoy benefits like complimentary checked baggage, in-flight refreshments, and flexible flight changes depending on the fare class. Firefly operates from both Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) Terminal 1 and Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang, providing convenient departure options.
Passengers flying with Malaysia Airlines can take advantage of through-checked baggage and included meals, simplifying the travel experience for multi-leg journeys. The Chinese New Year travel period, referred to as Chunyun, stands as Asia’s largest annual travel surge, primarily driven by significant domestic movements within China and increased outbound tourism to popular destinations like South Korea, Japan, and Southeast Asia.
