Viral Ad: Pakistan Airlines Resumes Paris Flights!
Pakistan International Airlines Resumes Flights to Paris Amid Controversy
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) is making headlines with its recent announcement to resume flights to Paris (CDG), set to commence on January 10, 2025. This decision marks a significant milestone for the airline, as it seeks to rebuild its international presence after years of operational challenges. However, the airline’s promotional campaign has sparked substantial controversy, drawing attention for its controversial design and messaging.
PIA’s Paris Flights Launch: A Viral Controversy
The airline’s promotional social media post on X (formerly Twitter) featured an aircraft seemingly flying towards the iconic Eiffel Tower, accompanied by the phrase, “Paris, we’re coming today.” While the intention was to highlight the return of flights from Islamabad (IST) to Paris, many users criticized the advertisement for evoking memories of a poorly received 1979 PIA campaign that featured an aircraft casting a shadow over the Twin Towers—structures that were tragically destroyed in the 9/11 attacks.
The backlash on social media was immediate, with users calling the advertisement inappropriate and insensitive. Comments ranged from sarcastic jabs to outright condemnation, with one user stating, “Looks like a threat rather than an advertisement.”
PIA’s Flight Resumption: A Step Toward Recovery
The resumption of flights to Paris signifies the end of a four-year ban imposed by European Union regulators due to safety concerns stemming from past incidents and a scandal involving fraudulent pilot licenses. Starting January 10, PIA will operate flights twice a week—every Friday and Sunday—offering direct connectivity between Islamabad and Paris.
In recent years, PIA has faced numerous challenges, including operational inefficiencies, safety issues, and financial instability. The EU ban exacerbated these struggles, restricting access to key European markets. The return to Paris is a crucial step for PIA in regaining passenger trust and re-establishing its international routes.
The inaugural flight departed Islamabad at 12:40 PM local time (0740 GMT), marking a pivotal moment for PIA as it strives to enhance its global footprint post-pandemic.
Looking Ahead: PIA’s UK Flight Plans
In addition to the Paris flights, PIA is also set to resume direct flights to the United Kingdom in February 2025. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has begun necessary preparations, with a team from the UK’s Department for Transport (DFT) scheduled to visit Pakistan from January 15 to January 17. Reports indicate that the CAA has secured an exemption from a mandatory security audit, and the remaining safety checks for both PIA and the CAA are expected to be a mere formality.
Initially, PIA plans to operate flights to Manchester, with plans to expand services to London and other UK cities in subsequent phases. CAA Director General Nadir Shafi Dar emphasized the importance of reconnecting Pakistan with the UK, describing the reinstatement of direct flights as a New Year’s gift to the nation.
