Cathay Pacific Sees Record Growth in Passengers and Freight
Cathay Pacific Reports Record Passenger and Cargo Growth in December 2024
Cathay Pacific Group has unveiled impressive traffic figures for December 2024, marking a significant recovery in both passenger and cargo transportation. As the airline completes its two-year rebuilding journey following the devastating impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, these results highlight the resilience and adaptability of Hong Kong’s flagship carrier.
In December 2024, Cathay Pacific transported 2,248,950 passengers, a remarkable 26.4% increase compared to December 2023. The airline’s revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) soared by 27.9% year on year, while the passenger load factor rose to 84.8%, up 3.6 percentage points. Additionally, available seat kilometers (ASKs) grew by 22.5% year on year, underscoring the airline’s robust recovery trajectory.
Record Passenger Numbers and Cargo Achievements
For the entire year of 2024, Cathay Pacific and its low-cost subsidiary, HK Express, achieved a combined total of over 28 million passengers, reflecting a 30.7% year-on-year increase. This achievement was particularly notable during December, traditionally a peak travel season as customers flock to visit family and friends over the holidays.
Lavinia Lau, Chief Customer and Commercial Officer, noted, “December was a significant milestone for us, with Cathay Pacific and HK Express together carrying over 100,000 passengers in a single day, the highest since our rebuild began.”
High Demand for Premium Services
The demand for premium cabins surged during the holiday season, indicating a revival in business travel. December also marked the return of seasonal flights to Cairns, which have been well-received by travelers. Lau emphasized the strategic advantages of the Hong Kong hub in attracting transit passengers, particularly those traveling between mainland China and global destinations.
Cargo Growth Continues
In terms of air freight, Cathay Pacific transported 143,564 tonnes of cargo in December 2024, an 11.7% increase from the previous year. The cargo revenue tonne kilometers (RFTKs) rose by 6.5%, and the cargo load factor improved to 61.4%. Overall, Cathay Cargo handled 1.5 million tonnes throughout 2024, marking an 11% increase from 2023.
Lau highlighted the sustained demand for e-commerce shipments and perishables, particularly from the Greater Bay Area and the Americas. "The healthy market momentum we experienced in previous months continued into December," she commented.
Looking Ahead: 2025 and Beyond
As Cathay Pacific heads into 2025, the airline is poised for further growth. Lau confirmed, “We have reached 100% of our pre-pandemic flight capacity as of January 2025.” The airline aims to strengthen Hong Kong’s status as a leading international aviation hub by adding new flights and destinations.
Upcoming Launches: Cathay Pacific has announced new direct flights between Hong Kong and Rome starting in June 2025, with six new destinations planned for the year. As the Lunar New Year approaches, the airline expects an uptick in bookings, with a subsequent focus on transit passengers leveraging its extensive global network.
In conclusion, Cathay Pacific’s remarkable December 2024 results reflect a successful recovery from the pandemic, positioning the airline for continued growth in the coming year.
